Gasim vows to expand job market with 500 Dhonis
Jumhooree Party leader Gasim Ibrahim has vowed to build 500 Dhonis within 5 years of his presidency if he is elected as the President to expand the job market. Meeting the new Ambassador afterwards, the President and the Ambassador discussed bilateral relations that exist between the two countries and ways to further strengthen ties. Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, former President and leader of the second largest party in the Maldives Progressive Party of Maldives PPM, has announced that he will not contest in the party’s primary to be held on 31 March to elect a presidential candidate to stand for election in the 7 September presidential race. The decision was communicated in a statement issued by the former President’s office this afternoon. Gayoom’s brother PPM’s Parliamenbtary Leader MP Abdulla Yamin and former Deputy President Umar Nasheer have already announced they will contest in the primary. PPM has announced interested members to file their applications before the end of February. No one has so far officially submitted applications, but it is expected Gayoom’s brother in law and powerful former minister Ilyas Ibrahim may join the primary race in addition to Yamin and Umar. Gayoom said he decided not to contest as there are capable persons in the party’s front line who are capable of ruling the country.

The Office of the Prosecutor General (PG) has stated that there was no intention of changing the case against the former President Mohamed Nasheed currently held at the Hulhumale' Magistrate Court to the Criminal Court. An official of the PG's office revealed this to the media in response to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Ms. Gabriela Knaul for stating that the Hulhumale' Magistrate Court's bench was not constituted transparently. The official said that there was no intention to change the case to the criminal court despite the statement of Knaul. Speaking to the media, the Special Rapporteur said that she does not believe that the Hulhumale' Magistrate Court has the jurisdiction to conduct the trial of Nasheed. She said that the case should be held at the Criminal Court and despite PG's observation that it should not be held at the Criminal Court because the case revolves around the arrest of the Chief Judge of the Criminal Court. She said that it is not the concern of the PG.

Judges and lawyers in the Maldives are not sufficiently independent from external pressures and interferences, a United Nations independent expert warned today wrapping up a visit to the Indian Ocean archipelago.“The concept of independence of the judiciary has been misconstrued and misinterpreted in the Maldives, including among judicial actors,” the UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Gabriela Knaul, told journalists in Malé. Ms. Knaul noted that a power struggle which ensued from a “lack of understanding in the delimitation of the respective competences” of the Parliament, the Government and the judiciary had “serious implications on the effective realization of the rule of law.” She added that the separation of powers is “the bedrock upon which the requirements of judicial independence and impartiality are founded” and represents an essential requirement of the proper administration of justice.

President Dr Mohamed Waheed has called on the Dhivehi Language Academy to organize special programmes at a national level, which would foster respect and love for Dhivehi language in our hearts, and boost the promotion and preservation of the language. The President made this remark while speaking at the special function organized by the Dhivehi Language Academy under the theme “Whole nation for Dhivehi Language”, held this afternoon to mark this year’s International Mother Language day. At the function held at the Republic Square, the President appealed to all government institutions to carry out all official communications in Dhivehi language, as stated by the law.

The Government of Maldives has emphasised that it did not struck a "deal" with anyone regarding former President Mohamed Nasheed's exit from the Chancery of the Indian High Commission in Male', yesterday. Government noted that Nasheed’s exit from the High Commission was not negotiated with the Government. In the statement of the government it was stated that Nasheed went in to the High Commission on 13 February 2013 seeking India’s ‘assistance’, and his continued stay and his decision to leave the High Commission was an issue between himself and the Indian High Commission. The UN Special Rapporteur on the Independence of Judges and Lawyers Ms. Gabrielle Knaul shared her preliminary observations of her visit with the Government in a de-briefing held yesterday. Ms. Knaul noted the changes that have taken place in the Maldives since the visit of the previous mandate-holder Dr. Despouy in 2007. She highlighted the new democratic system prescribed in the Constitution and commended the Maldives’ efforts in transition to democracy based on the rule of law and the principle of separation of powers. Knaul further stated that “all branches of the State are equally important and non should be above the other” and reiterated that all institutions have a “role to play and responsibilities regarding the consolidation of democracy”. President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said he was hopeful that developmental work for the islands would continue in spite of the budgetary difficulties the country was facing. He made this statement while speaking at the agreement signing ceremony of road networks in 6 islands. The six islands are Dhidhdhoo of Haa Alif atoll, Hanimaadhoo of Haa Dhaalu atoll, Kudahuvadhoo of Dhaalu atoll, Vilufushi of Thaa atoll, Villingili of Gaaf Alif atoll and Thinadhoo of Gaaf Dhaal atoll. He said due to the budgetary issues, all the developmental projects would not be run all at once. The President said with the completion of the road construction project, the six islands will see many other developments as well. President Waheed further noted that there were several other works that should be done before the commencement of the road construction project. In this regard, he noted the importance of having a land use plan as well as completion of other infrastructure projects before the commencement of the projects. The cabinet has today decided to establish a safari yacht marina in the Male’ area in order to provide safe port facilities to safari yachts. The Cabinet made this decision after discussing a paper presented by the Ministry of Transport and Communication. At the meeting, the Cabinet highlighted that tourism targeted for safari yachts was one of the main avenues for the inflow of foreign currency into the country. An Indian Naval Ship ‘Kalpeni’, has arrived Maldives on 12th February for a 5 day joint exercise with MNDF Coast Guard. The aim of the exercise is to jointly conduct maritime security patrol in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Maldives. During this visit, the MNDF Coast Guard personnel will be embarking the ship and will be undertaking various operational training with Indian Naval personnel. The joint patrol is aimed at increasing maritime security in the Indian Ocean region, especially in the waters around Maldives. Indian Naval Ship ‘Kalpeni’ is a completely indigenous new generation Naval Ship designed and built by M/s Garden Reach Ship Builder & Engineers, Kolkata, India, and is named after an important island of the Andaman & Nicobar archipelago in Indian Ocean. The ship performs roles such as Coastal surveillance and Patrol, Anti-smuggling, Anti-piracy, Fisheries Protection, Search & Rescue Operations and Naval Escort Operations. Senior politicians on Monday launched an independent panel into management of the world's oceans, which are facing unprecedented overfishing, pollution and habitat loss. The Global Ocean Commission is spearheaded by former British foreign secretary David Miliband, ex-Costa Rican president Jose Maria Figueres and South African cabinet minister Trevor Manuel. The goal is to place the spotlight on the threats facing seas that lie beyond national jurisdictions. These are regulated by the UN Convention on the Law of the Seas (UNCLOS), a loose-woven treaty that is now 30 years old.

President Dr Mohamed Waheed has this afternoon, returned to Male’ after concluding his visit to Egypt. The purpose of his visit to Egypt was to attend the 12th summit of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. Dr. Van Hollen has passed away in Washington, DC on the 30th of January, at the age of 90. His served as the U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives during the period of 1972-76. According to the U.S. Embassy in Colombo, Hollen was born in Maryland and served as a naval officer in the World War II, before pursuing an undergraduate education at Haverford College and a doctorate in political science from Johns Hopkins University. He has been a career member of the Foreign Service. The U.S. Embassy says, it will have a condolence book for members of the public at the American Center, open Tuesday through Saturday, from 9:00am until 6:00pm

Spokesperson of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), MP Ahmed Mahloof has revealed that President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has rejected PPM’s invitation to join the party and contest in the upcoming presidential election via PPM ticket. In an interview to local TV channel, DhiTV, MP Mahloof said last night that he believes that if the President accepted the invitation and joined PPM the party will win this year’s presidential election easily.
President Dr Mohamed Waheed has this morning inaugurated the road development project of Ameenee Magu in Kulhudhuffushi. The President is visiting the island as part of his current visit to Kulhudhuffushi and Hanimaadhoo of South Thiladhummathi Atoll. The agreement for the development of new road networks in Kulhudhuffushi was also signed at the ceremony. Speaking at the ceremony, the President said that it was an honour to be able to inaugurate the construction of the first modern road in Kulhudhuffushi, under proper infrastructural planning. The President noted that it was an important step towards the development of the island. In his speech the President said that, in building roads, the most priority must be given to build them in a way that it was easier for pedestrians to commute. He underlined that executing projects without efficient planning always lead to very challenging consequences. He also stressed the importance of planting trees alongside the road as it gets completed.
President Dr Mohamed Waheed has announced the State Trading Organisations (STO), in joint venture with a foreign partner will start fuel bunkering in the Maldives. He made this announcement while addressing the people of Kulhudhuffushi Island, this evening. He said that discussions with the foreign company are now underway, and the government would soon commence the survey of the project. Noting the importance of facilitating job opportunities to the people of Kulhudhufushi, President Waheed said that the oil bunkering facility would create number of job opportunities in the area. Former President Mohamed Nasheed has alleged that the former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is trying to create friction between Yaameen and Ilyas to contest in the election on the claims to save the PPM from splitting. Minister of Islamic Affairs Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said that no other presidency of the Maldives granted more freedom to religious scholars than the current administration of President Dr. Mohamed Waheed. Day National Award of Honour and National Award of Recognition To Be Presented On Independence

Countries with the best levels of press freedom are ranked highest. The Maldives fell 30 places to 103rd place this year. Fiji, which suffered a coup in 2006, was also placed alongside the Maldives. According to Reporters without Borders: “In the Maldives… the events that led to the resignation of President Nasheed led to violence and threats against journalists in state TV and private media outlets regarded as pro-Nasheed by the coup leaders.”

Income disparity between the rich and poor has increased in the Maldives: President Waheed
President Dr Mohamed Waheed has today said even though the revenue of the country has doubled within the past 10 years, the reality is that the income disparity between the rich and poor has increased. The President made this statement while addressing the people of Kan’ditheemu Island, as the last leg of his tour of some islands in the Miladhummadulu Atoll. Continuing in this regard, President Waheed noted that Maldives is now in the upper-middle income group of countries, with the Real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita income amounting to $6,000 USD. However, the President remarked that the income inequality gap of the country has risen, making the rich richer, and the poor poorer.
President Dr Mohamed Waheed has met with the people of Shaviyani Goidhoo, as part of his visit to the island today. Addressing the people of Goidhoo, the President remarked that the students’ performance in last year’s O’level examinations were not satisfactory, and urged the teachers to work harder, towards better results this year. Continuing in this regard, President Waheed highlighted the exemplary cooperation of the people of Goidhoo towards the development of the island. He also appealed to the people, to extend the same cooperation for the improvement of O’level results in the future, and called upon parents and guardians to provide students additional support at home. President Meets with Mayors of City Councils and Presidents of Atoll Councils
President Dr Mohamed Waheed has today met with the mayors of the two city councils and the presidents of atoll councils. The meeting was held Sunday afternoon at the President’s Office. President Waheed said the main purpose of the meeting was to understand the main concerns of the councils and to assist the councils in addressing those concerns. President underscored the need for stronger relations between the government and the councils as well as direct and more systematic ways for the councils to communicate with the government. He said he would make easier arrangements for the councils to meet with government authorities. The President also informed the councils that he would submit a supplementary budget mid this year. The representatives of the councils briefed the President on the main challenges that they face. They especially raised the budgetary issues they have. The meeting was attended by Home Minister Dr Mohamed Jameel and Finance Minister Abdulla Jihad.

Ministry conducted a media event yesterday morning to share its Work Plan for the year 2013 with the media. The event was held at Asaree Hall at SHE building. The primary purpose of this meeting is to carry out the projects proposed by the ministry while keeping the public well informed about these projects. The local media was invited to cover the event. The event was inaugurated by the Minister of Environment and Energy Dr. Mariyam Shakeela. Heads of the ministry, departments and staff also participated in this event. During the event, a presentation was given highlighting the projects and programmes planned for the year 2013 and the budget allocated. President Dr Mohamed Waheed has appealed to all authoritative institutions and personnel in the government, to be vigilant of a system that would ensure a just, fair and equitable governance in the Maldives. The President said that democracy was established in the Maldives so that the people’s needs are fulfilled, and a fair government is ensured.
Ministry of State for Tourism, Ahmed Shameem has said that Maldives might become the next Somalia if state funds are misused and wasted by everyone who has authority over it. Shameem said that the civil war in Somalia was ignited when those who have authority to use state funds were given the opportunity to misuse it and use it achieve their own political agendas. He said that this lead to the destruction of Somalia’s nationhood.
State Minister of Finance and Treasury, Abbas Adil Riza has said that the image of Maldives has been tarnished by the many debts of the state. Abbas Adil Riza made this remark speaking at the ceremony held to launch the “Orchid Activity Centre” of the Qaumee Ittihaad Party. During the ceremony Abbas signed his membership for the party. Abbas said that these debts cannot be paid and resolved except by a joint effort by all stake holders. He said that the country is drowning in the debts and all should work hard to alleviate Maldives from this crisis.
Airport In Noonu Atoll Will Be Built This Year: Assures the President
President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said Noonu Atoll airport project would be announced and that with new investors, work on the project would soon begin. He also expressed confidence that the airport would be completed during this year. He made this announcement in his address to the people of Noonu Hen’badhoo, during his visit to the island. President said although the airport project was handed over to a party, work on the project has been delayed for various reasons. He urged the people to be patient and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to provide services and assistance to the people. He also assured the people that the government would continue its basic services to the people, in spite of the budget concerns. During his visit to the island, the President inaugurated a jetty constructed in the island with the assistance from Champaa Brothers. The President thanked Champaa Brothers, especially Champaa Mohamed Moosa for the generous assistance.
Addressing the people of Hen’badhoo of Noonu Atoll on Thursday, President Dr Mohamed Waheed announced that a supplementary budget would be presented to the People’s Majlis mid this year. He said it would not be possible to focus on mega infrastructure projects without providing basic services to the people. “We need to protect the people’s health. Health Centres should function more efficiently. Children need education. There is no point in constructing harbours without providing these services. And without proper health care for our children, there is really no need to build airports”, said the President. Continuing in this regard, the President it was important to priorities our needs and that necessary changes would be brought to the supplementary budget. Highlighting the country’s economic situation, which he described as “not so bad”, the President said the tourism and fisheries sector had improved in 2012.

Gasim Ibrahim has said that all students who pass in more than five subjects in GCE A’Level exams will be given free degree scholarships in a government of Jumhooree Party. Leader of the Jumhooree Party, MP Gasim said that all students in grade eight and above will be given laptops for free in a government of his party. He said that if the state budget cannot cover the costs he himself will personally spend on it.

President Dr Mohamed Waheed has said that special attention must be devoted to the issue of Aviation Security. He made this remark while speaking at the function to inaugurate the Aviation Security Command. The function was held Monday morning at the Islamic Centre. President said even though the Maldives is a small country, security challenges faced by the country are not small and are constantly evolving. The Arctic sea ice has not only declined over the past decade but has also become distinctly thinner and younger. Researchers are now observing mainly thin, first-year ice floes which are extensively covered with melt ponds in the summer months where once metre-thick, multi-year ice used to float. Sea ice physicists at the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), have now measured the light transmission through the Arctic sea ice for the first time on a large scale, enabling them to quantify consequences of this change.

President Dr Mohamed Waheed has decided that members of the Cabinet, officials of the security forces, and senior officials of the government will not attend the People’s Majlis Committee on Oversight of the Government. Three top US officials will visit Sri Lanka and the Maldives next week amidst concerns of a breakdown in democracy in both countries, the US embassy in Colombo has said on Saturday. The visiting Chinese Table Tennis Team from HENAN Province that arrived in the Maldives on Wednesday on a four-day visit began their matches last night at the Male’ Sports Centre Table Tennis Hall. The first match was an Exhibition match by the Chinese players, who demonstrated outstanding skill and finesse and was a real treat from the young Maldivian players and spectators alike. This was followed by Friendly matches between players from China and Maldives. As expected the Maldivian players proved no match to the talented and experienced Chinese players. Nonetheless it was a valuable learning experience for all of them.
President Waheed will contest in the upcoming presidential election: GIP

Auditor General’s Office has stated that the audit of the President’s Office has shown that the former President Mohamed Nasheed used the budget of the President’s Office for his own personal use. According to the report issued by the Auditor General, Niyaz Ibrahim, the audit report of the President’s Office on 2010 revealed that more than 27 million Ruffiya was spent from the state budget for the President’s Official Residence.

Attorney General Azima Shukoor has stated that the Government Evaluation Committee of the Peoples’ Majlis is reviewing and investigating the report of the Commission of National Inquiry, CoNI, in violation of the constitution and the rules of procedure of the Majlis. Azima made this remark in a letter addressed to the Speaker of the Peoples’ Majlis Abdullah Shahid. State Attorney General Azima said that the committees of the Majlis have no authority to make decisions on the report when the Majlis failed to decide on the report in the Majlis floor when it was sent to the Speaker and four committees of the Majlis.
Council member of the Adhaalath Party, Mohamed Iyaad Hameed has said that they want to sustain Adhaalath Party to preserve and uphold the nationalism of the people. Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Iyaad noted that the Adhaalath party have not done enough works to gain members to the party because the party was busy in reform works. “Since the inception of the party, we were faced with many big challenges. The new Ambassador of the Maldives to the United States, Ahmed Sareer, presented his Letter of Credence to the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama. The ceremony was held today at the White House. After receiving the Credentials, President Obama congratulated Ambassador Sareer and stated that he looked forward to working closely with the Maldives to deepen the already close relations between the two countries. President Obama applauded the Maldives’ first democratic elections in 2008, and said that he looked to the Government of Maldives to continue strengthening democratic institutions, protecting freedom of expression, and ensuring rule of law.

Political Advisor of the President and the Press Secretary of the President’s Office, Ahmed Thaufeeg has said that the members of the Peoples’ Majlis are committing financial crimes in the guise of reviewing the report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI). Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Thaufeeg said that he appeals independent state institutions to stop this immediately. He said that the members of the Majlis are misusing state funds and usurping them for their own gains in guise of an investigation. He noted that they are wasting public finances in a time when the budget is so tight that the government is facing difficulties in serving the people.

Government Evaluation Committee of the Peoples’ Majlis has cancelled the meeting to be held at N. Atoll Maafaru and has departed to the island as a fact-finding mission. The members of the government evaluation committee of the Majlis departed to Maafaru after deciding to hold a committee meeting in the island. The secretariat of the Peoples’ Majlis said that the committee last night passed not to hold an official meeting of the committee in Maafaru. The committee decided this because if an official meeting is to be held than it will be cost a lot and it is not proper to use state funds extravagantly.
Minister of Education Dr. Ahmed Asim has said that the new academic year resolution is to improve the academic standard and to focum on improving the technical capabilities of teachers and to provide schools with modern educational means. Dr. Asim made this remark in his address on the occasion of the beginning of a new academic year. The Minister said that the main objective of the education ministry for this academic new year is to improve the standard of education, increase teachers’ expertise, and develop the tools used for teaching in schools.

resident Dr Mohamed Waheed has called on all Maldivians to strengthen national character and revive the spirit of nationhood. He made this appeal in his address to the nation on the occasion of National Day. He also called on all citizens to promote and nourish Maldivian culture in bringing up our children and in our familial and social relations. The President said, on this special occasion, it was important to reflect on the current political challenges. He said peace and security of the country would depend on how we prioritize national interests. “No matter how strong political rivalry is, we must not allow it to create any difficulties to the people. Developmental efforts must not be hindered”, said the President. Continuing in this regard, the President said we must not allow the country to fall into destruction while protecting the interest of an individual or a group of people. He added that no person should be allowed to destroy the country’s social fabric or tarnish the country’s image. In his speech, the President also spoke on the changing demographics of the country. He further noted an increase in school drop-outs with no skills or training. Highlighting the importance of increasing employment opportunities, the government’s policy was to facilitate all students under 18 years of age to participate in some form of academic program.

What the ‘Geneva vote’ in March last could not achieve, it now seems, the Parliament vote on Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake’s impeachment is capable of attaining. It was argued then that the Geneva vote aimed at destabilising not just the incumbent government but Sri Lanka as a nation. Despite the vote, the Geneva process did not achieve that goal. Today, the impeachment vote can do it, without instigation from outside and exclusively from within. With 117 MPs from the ruling combine signing the impeachment motion, the dye had been cast. There was no doubt which way would the PSC go, or which way would the vote in Parliament. Yet, the decision of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to seek advice from four individuals on the voted motion, and the declaration of the Government that the President could take his time deciding on the impeachment order that he would have to pass, gives some hope that the nation was still not at the brink – though not far away from it, either.

President Mohamed Waheed has said Maldives is forced to think about and take measures against the changes that the “national character” is undergoing. Speaking at a ceremony to celebrate the National Day in L. Fonadhoo, the President said, ‘If the number of migrant workers continue to increase, [Maldivian] national character will be lost.’ He added that there were approximately 111,000 migrant workers on work visa, while illegal migrant workers number more than 40,000. The President said for every three Maldivians there was a migrant worker, and if the number increased at its current rate of 20% per year, migrant population will surpass that of the Maldivian population in 6 years.
Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen has said that the threat of a coup with the assistance of foreign mercenaries is still imminent. He said that it was PPM member Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik who summoned different important people to the committee meetings for further investigation of the report. “I only proposed to present the witness reports. However to summon people to the committee, then it was proposed by Nihan. The members of this committee are all working together,” he said. Committee Chair Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed said that there they have got surprising information from people who were summoned to the committee. Ahmed Easa said that this investigation exposes the problems within the government. He said that former President Mohamed Nasheed, Former Defence Minister, Former Home Minister, Chief of Defence Force and many others are scheduled to be summoned in the future meetings of the committee.

Ministrer of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abdul Samad Abdulla has said that the issue of trafficking in persons as a grave concern for the Government, given its domestic and international commitments. He said this speaking at the ceremony held to launch an assertive campaign to counter the issue of human trafficking in the Maldives. “The Blue Ribbon Campaign: Stand Against Human Trafficking” is aimed at raising public awareness on the issue of trafficking in the Maldives and is especially designed to reach out to the general public, including potential victims, on the causes and consequences of the crime of trafficking.
Adhaalath Party has said that they will not seek the aid and assistance of the Peoples’ Majlis to reduce the minimum membership of political parties. Speaking in a press conference, Spokesperson of the Adhaalath Party Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said that there is no reason for the party to seek the aid of the Majlis when the Majlis passed the issue with the majority of 64 members supporting to pass the minimum membership of political parties. Sheikh Shaheem said that the party will not try to reduce the minimum membership despite the fact that the Majlis passed to dissolve all political parties with less than 10,000 members. In addition to this, Sheikh Shaheem said that the party will not raise alarm over the decision of the Majlis. He said that Adhaalath Party is firm and will not waver. No rape victims are treated as perpetrators in Maldives- PG Prosecutor General’s Office has stated that no rape victims or victims of any form of sexual abuse are tried in court as perpetrators in the Maldives. Speaking to Miadhu Daily in view of the misinformation spread in some of the international media that a rape victim of the age of 15 could face public flogging in the Maldives, Assistant Public Prosecutor of the state Prosecutor General’s Office Hussain Nashid said that the state will not treat the 15 year old girl as a perpetrator.
Ambassador of Iraq to the Maldives, Mr Kahtan Taha Khalaf has paid a courtesy call on President Dr Mohamed Waheed this afternoon. At the meeting held at the President’s Office, the President briefed the Ambassador on the current political status of the country and on the presidential election to be held this year. Media Secretary Masood Imad has said that there is no reason to investigate the CoNI (Committee of National Inquiry)’s report on the change of government on February 7, 2012 when it is a report of an investigation that has already been concluded. Masood Imad made this remark speaking to Miadhu Daily in relation to the President’s Office’s rejection of the request of the Peoples’Majlis for the reports of the statements of some people to CoNI. He said that the investigation carried out by CoNI was done transparently and the conclusion of the report was publicized. He said that the confidentiality of the people who gave their statements regarding the matter will be protected.
Luanda - The Parliamentary leader of Maldives Abdulla Shahid has expressed his country's intention to develop bilateral cooperation in various sectors with Angola. The Asian archipelago official, who is paying a three-day official visit to the country, said so Monday when speaking to the press at the "4 de Fevereiro" International Airport in Luanda. Abdulla Shahid said his visit to Angola is intended to strengthen Parliamentary cooperation between the two legislative bodies and pledged to seize the opportunity to identify, with the Angolan MPs, areas to extend bilateral cooperation in various fields. Maldives Parliament leader, who is in Luanda, coming from South Africa, as part of a tour of several African countries, has reaffirmed such a availability due to the fact of being the first high ranking official of his State to come to Angola. According to him, the visit will allow to formalise the issue with the local authorities. At the end of his statement, the Maldives official praised the efforts made by the Angolan government focussed on improved living standards for population, with stress to the rehabilitation of roads, schools, hospitals, airports among other infrastructures.
Vice President Mohamed Waheed Deen has said that freedom in a real democracy is intertwined with economic freedom. He made this remark while speaking at the function to inaugurate the National Validation Workshop on Maldives Economic Diversification Strategy. Gemanafushi MP Ilham Ahmed has said that dissolving Male’ City Council is not a solution but the council should stop ridiculing the government and the people. Ilham said that it might be not the best of decisions to abolish a city council when the democracy in the Maldives is in its early stages. However, he said that if the council continues to hinder the government from serving the people the government cannot stay silent delaying action against the council.

President and First Lady Return to Male
President Dr Mohamed Waheed and First Lady Ilham Hussain returned to Male on Saturday, after their private visit to Malaysia. During his stay in Malysia President Dr Mohamed Waheed has met with the Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato' Sri Anifah Aman the Maldives High Commission in Malaysia. Discussions at the meeting were focused on ways to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries. Also President Dr Mohamed Waheed has met with Dr Mahathir Mohamed, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia and informed about situation in Maldives and discussions were on the close bilateral relations between the Maldives and Malaysia. The President also discussed on economic and political situation in the Maldives. The President told Dr Mahathir that the latter had always kept a close relationship with the Maldives and invited him to make a visit to the Maldives at a mutually convenient time. PM Mahathir thanked the President and talked on the relations between the two countries.
Interim Leader of the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), Ahmed Shiyam has said that the development of the Maldivian nation is on hold because of the power struggles of former Presidents instead of serving the nation and the people. Shiyam made this remark speaking at the first public rally of the party after officially registering at the Elections Commission. Shiyam said that many of the people are disappointed and frustrated at the actions of some of the former Presidents of Maldives. He said that if they ruled the nation sincerely they the country would have developed and progressed than it is today. He said that the people got frustrated with these leaders because instead of serving the nation they were busy struggling for power and authority. MDA Leader Shiyam said that the nation does not need namesake leaders but is in need of leaders who will rule sincerely. “The nation is in need of leaders who would take the nation to higher levels of progress and developments. Gemanafushi constituency MP Ilham Ahmed has said that presenting the report of the Committee of National Inquiry (CONI) on the events of February 7 2012 that led to the change of the government is no different from leaking the whole report on the internet. MP Ilham said that many confidential documents of the Majlis have been leaked in the internet many times. He said that the government should decide on presenting the report to the Majlis very wisely considering the reality of the Majlis.
Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has warned to take action to expedite the vote of no confidence against President Dr. Mohamed Waheed and Home Minister Dr. Mohamed Jameel. MDP made this remark in a statement released yesterday criticizing the government for deciding to dissolve Male’ City Council. MDP alleged that the government is playing a wicked game phase by phase to destroy all those who disagree with the government. MDP said that the vote of no confidence against the President and the Home Minister should be taken as soon as possible. MDP said that the government’s obstruction and challenges against elected members of the Majlis, councilors are traits of a undemocratic government and a dictatorship. MDP said that Male’ City Council represents the people of Male’ and the people will never be pleased with the decision of the government to dissolve the council. MDP said that the party will do whatever possible against this decision of the government.
The Parliament speaker of the Republic of Maldives, Abdulla Shahid, will on 7-9 January pay his first official visit to Angola, aimed to reinforce interparliamentary cooperation ties. According to a press note from the Angolan National Assembly that reached Angop on Friday, during his stay in the country, Maldives speaker will be received in private by his Angolan counterpart, Fernando da Piedade Dias dos Santos, and then he will meet the heads of parliamentary groups of the National Assembly.

Minister of Islamic Affairs, Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said that despite the tightening of the budget allocated for the Ministry of Islamic Affairs by the Peoples’ Majlis, the ministry will be handed over to the new government elected in the upcoming presidential election.
Kudahuvadhoo constituency MP Ahmed Amir has said that the political party bill is a dress sewn for a certain people. Amir made this remark speaking at the Peoples’ Majlis regarding the nominees appointed for the vacant post in the Maldives Broadcast Commission. “I reiterate that we are not worried about getting 11 thousand members for our party. If any party is to gain a membership of 11 thousand then we will show to all that the capability of our party and we will gain that much members by the will of Allah,” he said.
The Ministry of Islamic Affairs has said that it is difficult to believe that the Peoples’ Majlis reduced and cut down the budget allocated for the ministry because of economical issues. Speaking to the press, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Sheikh Mohamed Didi said that the ministry is raising concern regarding the reduction of the budget because the budget was cut down so much that it will be hardly possible for the manage the works of the ministry from that budget.

MP Shiyam said that the political situation of the country today is very gloomy and top political parties are threatening to eliminate all other parties. “In democratic countries such as the US and the UK, there exist many smaller political parties and various political ideologies. And as a result of this, it strengthens their social and economic matters. This is the reality that we see today,” he said.
Minister of Islamic Affairs Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said that the Peoples’ Majlis is an honorable institution that guides the government to be on the right track and therefore the members of the Majlis should show this in their actions. Sheikh Shaheem said that the Majlis members should be role models that the people look up to since it is the Majlis which passes laws and make policies. Minister of State for Tourism, Ahmed Shameem has said that the biggest achievement of 2012 after the change of government in 7 February 2012 is safeguarding and protecting the public assets of the Maldives. Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Shameem said that the former government tried to sell Ports Authority, Stelco, Post Office and Island Aviation after selling of Dhiraagu, Water company and the airport.
Deputy Leader of the Jumhooree Party Ameen Ibrahim has said that the situation of the country can only be changed by stopping the drug epidemic. Ameen made this remark speaking at the meeting held at M. Konooz, the activity centre of the Jumhooree Party to voice against the abuse against women. He said that child abuse, women abuse and the abuse of men are all linked to drugs. He said that it is incumbent upon all stake holders and the people to make efforts to stop this epidemic.
Minister of State for Home Affairs, Abdullah Mohamed has said that the address of the former President Nasheed on the occasion of the new year is an own goal scored by Nasheed. Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Abdullah said that Nasheed knows best that the international community was incapable of stopping him from violating the constitution and law during his three year rule. “The people witnessed and experienced it.
