Socio-economic developments are the biggest successes of the first year- President


President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has said that social stability and economic developments are the biggest successes of his government.

The President made this remark speaking to the media on his arrival at the Ibrahim Nasir International Airport back from Egypt on conclusion of the 12th summit of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference.

President Dr. Waheed said that the government took measures to curb crime and it has decreased over the past year even with the many challenges faced by the government. He said that the government also was successful in its efforts to advertise and promote the tourism industry despite the calls of the opposition to the international community to boycott Maldivian resorts. He added that the number of tourists who visited Maldives last year were more than the number who visited the previous year.

President said that the establishment of stability and peace in the society was also a success of the government. He said that the government faced lots of challenges in stabilizing the society from the unrest caused by political conflicts.

In addition to this President Dr. Waheed highlighted the transition of Hanimaadhoo airport to an international airport as one of the remarkable successes of the govermment.

The President also briefed on the successes of the government on areas such as democracy consolidation, good governance, rule of law, safety and security, economic development, job creation, health and education. Other areas of success he highlighted include housing and infrastructure, transport system as well as prevention of narcotics. He also noted that his government has also embarked on a process of strengthening constitutional governance, through ensuring the independence of the Judiciary.

The President reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding democracy, respecting the rule of law, and being transparent. He also spoke of his commitment to the National Unity Government, and to work together with everyone.
