No  reason for Nasheed to seek refuge at India High Commission- Thasmeen

Leader of the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP), Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has said that the situation of the country has not reached such a state that compels the former President Mohamed Nasheed to take refuge at the Indian High Commission.

Thasmeen made this remark expressing concern over the issue of Nasheed staying at the High Commission claiming to have sought refuge there. He said that there is no possible reason for him to stay there.

Thasmeen noted that that this issue can be difficult to resolve for both Maldives and India if Nasheed does not leave the High Commission.

"A former President going to a diplomatic mission and claiming that his life is in danger would not bring any solutions to the problem. Rather he should seek immediate help through dialogue," he said.

Thasmeen noted that  every individual is equal before and under the law. "Even if it is Nasheed, if he violates the law, he should not be given a blind eye. The constitution states that every individual is equal before and under the law," he said.

Meanwhile, Indian High Commissioner DM Mulay has held a meeting with Thasmeen regarding the current situation. Although DRP confirmed it no details on the meeting were revealed.
