Nasheed’s 3 years were worse than 17 years of Portuguese rule- Abdullah

Minister of State for Home Affairs Abdullah Mohamed has said that the damages done to Maldives in the three year rule of former President Mohamed Nasheed were worse than the seventeen years of Portuguese rule.

Speaking to Miadhu Daily, State Minister Abdullah said that the Portuguese looted the wealth of the people openly and they forced the people to drink alcohol after announcing it.

“However during Nasheed’s rule he did these wrongs to the people through deception and deceit. He said that the government would not be involved in any trade ventures. However what we saw next was him making more than sixty companies and giving top posts to his party activities. And he dragged the country into debt crisis. Since the establishment of the Maldivian state until the year 2008 the debt was 9 billion Maldivian Ruffiya. However, in the three years of his rule alone it reached 23 billion Ruffiya. And in fact some say that it reached 31 billion ruffiya,” he said.

Abdullah said that the Portuguese used intoxicants and alcohol in their own quarters but Nasheed tried to spread it among the people. He said that this is proved from the many boxes full of alcoholic beverages and drugs found in the residence of Nasheed.

In addition to this Abdullah said that the people are aware of the plots of Nasheed now. He said that the people will not be fooled by the deception and lies of Nasheed anymore and he cannot pull the wool over their eyes anymore.
