Committee meeting cancelled, visits Maafar as a fact-finding mission

Government Evaluation Committee of the Peoples’ Majlis has cancelled the meeting to be held at N. Atoll Maafaru and has departed to the island as a fact-finding mission.

The members of the government evaluation committee of the Majlis departed to Maafaru after deciding to hold a committee meeting in the island.

The secretariat of the Peoples’ Majlis said that the committee last night passed not to hold an official meeting of the committee in Maafaru. The committee decided this because if an official meeting is to be held than it will be cost a lot and it is not proper to use state funds extravagantly.

A member who expressed displeasure at some actions of the committee told Miadhu Daily that although a committee meeting is not held the state will still be covering the costs of the travels. He said that a meeting held in the island will not cost that much. He said that he believes that this is an absurd decision of the committee.

The people of Maafaru have been protesting because budget was not allocated to develop an airport in the island which was promised by the previous two governments since 2006.

Former President Nasheed vowed to build 50 flats in addition to developing an airport in the island but has not fulfilled any of his promises.
