President rejected invitation to join PPM- Mahloof

Spokesperson of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), MP Ahmed Mahloof has revealed that President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has rejected PPM’s invitation to join the party and contest in the upcoming presidential election via PPM ticket.

In an interview to local TV channel, DhiTV, MP Mahloof said last night that he believes that if the President accepted the invitation and joined PPM the party will win this year’s presidential election easily.

Mahloof said that if President Dr.Waheed had joined PPM he would have got the full support of the party. He said that President initiated campaign by launching his own campaign centre under the influence of those close to him who worked against former President Gayoom during his rule.

Meanwhile, President Dr. Waheed said, in his address at the ceremony held to launch his campaign centre, that it is unlikely for one party alone to win the election without the backing and support of other parties. He said that he is ready to join any party if the need arises.

President said that important changes should be brought to the social, political and cultural issues of the country. He said that these rectifications and changes can only be brought by the support of many parties.

He said that his party, Gaumee Ittihaad Party (National Alliance Party), represents unity for the sake of the nation. He said that his party will always cooperate with others in goodness for the betterment of the country.
