No MP is above the law- Nasheed

Kulhudhufushi MP Mohamed Nasheed has said that no member of the Peoples’ Majlis should think that they are above the law and that they would not be accountable for their violations of the constitution and law.

Speaking at VTV, MP Nasheed said that every individual regardless whether they are members of the Majlis or not will have follow a set of rules.” However, the majority of the people do not perceive that the members are accountable by law because there exists no good system,” he said.

Nasheed expressed hopes that this issue will be resolved when the privileges bill is passed. He said that members who violate the law should be punished and should be made responsible for their crimes.

“It is wrong to think that somehow the majlis members are above the law. It is totally wrong to think that they won’t have to compensate for the damages inflicted by them. It is wrong to think that they will not be punished by law. In world countries, this is not the case, actions are taken against MPs who violate the law,” he said.

Nasheed said that when a proper system is implemented than MPs will be made accountable and responsible for the actions. This system to make Majlis members accountable for any crime committed within and outside the majlis should be established soon, he said.
