Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has said he is the middle of the cake and will balance dividing the cake amongst his Brother Yamin and Umar Naseer and amongst all others contesting party posts in the congress.
He has said that he is not going to support or campaign for any candidates in the internal elections of the Progressive Party of Maldives, PPM.
Addressing a party meeting of candidates at Raanbaa Restaurant, Gayoom, who is the interim President of the party, said there no candidate will be given preferential treatment during the internal elections of the party.
"I am not supporting any candidate since I want this election to be free and fair," Gayoom said.
Gayoom said that PPM’s congress will build the framework for the future of the party. He said that there should be no rifts in the ranks of the party.
The former President said that each candidate should understand that some of them are going to lose and only some will win the election. He said that he has experienced defeat in the Presidential Election of 2008. He said that all candidates should understand this point well and should not give any room for splits within the party.
