Constitution cannot be sacrificed for anyone- Gasim
Leader of Jumhooree Party, Gasim Ibrahim has said that the constitution cannot be sacrificed for anyone.
Speaking to Miadhu Daily, JP Leader Gasim said that the constitution is the highest authority of a country and all people are obliged to respect, obey and uphold the constitution.
Gasim said that no one should be allowed to violate the constitution and challenge it. He said that violating the constitution is the biggest treachery upon a nation.
In addition to this Gasim stressed that the constitution clearly mentions that that every individual is equal before and under the law.
Meanwhile, President Dr. Mohamed Waheed made a similiar remark and said the tradition of giving privileges for a group of elites to stay above the constitution and law was brought to end by the people because the people do not believe that anyone should stay above the law. He said that the new constitution that the Maldives implemented does not allow it and clearly mentions that every individual is equal before and under the law.
The President emphasized that the constitution does not differentiate between the strong, the popular and the weak. He said that all are equal before and under the law and none is given any special privileges to stay above the law and bend the rules.
