If state funds are misused Maldives might become the next Somalia: Shameem

Ministry of State for Tourism, Ahmed Shameem has said that Maldives might become the next Somalia if state funds are misused and wasted by everyone who has authority over it.

Shameem said that the civil war in Somalia was ignited when those who have authority to use state funds were given the opportunity to misuse it and use it achieve their own political agendas. He said that this lead to the destruction of Somalia’s nationhood.

Shameem noted that the reports of the Auditor General reveal that state funds are being misused by people who are given the power to use it.

“Whether it be the President’s Office, Judiciary or the Peoples’ Majlis, the auditor general’s reports reveal that the state funds are being misused by these authorities. Almost all institutions except a few are involved in corruption. This is a very sad situation,” he said.

In addition to this Shameem noted that it is more worrying when the people who make the laws are misusing state funds for illegal purposes.

Shameem said that Maldives can maintain the country’s nationhood only by strengthening economic policies. He said that if the economy of the nation collapses than the nation will be on the verge of destruction and mayhem.
