AG says Nasheed used state funds for personal use

Auditor General’s Office has stated that the audit of the President’s Office has shown that the former President Mohamed Nasheed used the budget of the President’s Office for his own personal use.

According to the report issued by the Auditor General, Niyaz Ibrahim, the audit report of the President’s Office on 2010 revealed that more than 27 million Ruffiya was spent from the state budget for the President’s Official Residence.

The report stated that this amount was used in violation of the law as the constitution states that the safety and protection of the President and family should be given by the Ministry of Defence. The report also revealed that Nasheed spent more than fourty thousand ruffiya for a family trip to Singapore and also spent fourteen thousand ruffiya for a family trip to Sri lanka.

In addition to this the report also revealed that Nasheed spent from the President’s Office Budget to charter a flight from Sri Lanka to Maldives. The report noted that there was no known emergency for him to charter a flight and spend the state funds for it.

Although AG has reiterated the calls to take action against all those who misused state funds Miadhu Daily understands that no one has been charged for it so far.
