Indian High Commission’s action tantamount to obstructing judiciary: Official
The manner in which the High Commission of India in Male’ has acted regarding former President Mohamed Nasheed can be considered tantamount to obstructing the Judiciary of the Maldives, said a top official of the President’s Office who wants to remain anonymous.
The official said so speaking in a DhiTV program. He said it is a matter of deep concern that hatred is growing between the people of two countries because of the actions of the Indian High Commission in Male’ .
The Government of Maldives is deeply disturbed and concerned about the way the High Commission has acted regarding former President Nasheed, the official continued.
He further said the case file against the former President was investigated and sent to the court during the rule of President Nasheed by an independent Prosecutor General.
The official also said in the case of former President using the High Commission to flee from trial in fear of facing a sentence, the High Commission must have studied the issues pertaining to the matter. Therefore the action of the High Commission can be considered as an obstruction in the Judiciary of the Maldives. The Government is very concerned by such actions which could damage the image of neighboring India in the minds of the Maldivian people and increase hatred against India. The Government is deeply concerned about this, the official said.
The official however said he does not believe the relations between the two countries will be affected. The Government will take serious actions on these matters in future too, he said.
