PPM will support a supplementary budget- Yaameen


Parliamentary leader of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Abdullah Yaameen has said that the PPM supports the decision of President Dr. Mohamed Waheed to present a supplementary budget to the People’s Majlis mid this year.

Speaking in an interview to DhiTV, Yaameen said that this is an excellent decision by the government. He said that the PPM will fully support the supplementary budget if it is presented by the government.

Yaameen said that the parties agreed to support such a decision when the Majlis passed the state budget.

In addition to this Yaameen said that the budget committee also discussed the issue of the condition of the state debts. He said that the members supported that it is best that the budget for this year should be reduced.

According to the constitution the government can present the Majlis with a supplementary budget anytime of the year. Yaameen said that the government has the authority to try and resolve every budget difficulties faced by the government. He expressed confidence the members of the Majlis will support the supplementary budget.

Meanwhile, the President recently announced that a supplementary budget would be presented to the People’s Majlis mid this year. He said it would not be possible to focus on mega infrastructure projects without providing basic services to the people.

“We need to protect the people’s health. Health Centres should function more efficiently. Children need education. There is no point in constructing harbours without providing these services. And without proper health care for our children, there is really no need to build airports”, said the President.

Continuing in this regard, the President it was important to priorities our needs and that necessary changes would be brought to the supplementary budget.

Highlighting the country’s economic situation, which he described as “not so bad”, the President said the tourism and fisheries sector had improved in 2012.
