Majlis Trying to Over Power Government
President’s Political and Press Secretary Ahmed Thaufeeg has said that iry (CoNI) is a violation of the executivethe demand of the Peoples’ Majlis for the details of the report of the Commission of National Inqu powers granted to the President by the constitution.
Press Secretary Thaufeeg made this remark in response to a question asked by Miadhu Daily. He said that the government of the President Dr. Mohamed Waheed is government which cooperates with all powers of state and institutions within the confines of the constitution. He said that the government has set an example in this regard a number of times.
“However this does not mean that other state powers can try to cause undue influence on the government. This is not what it means. The government will not let this happen,” he said.
Thaufeeg said that the CoNI was established by the President to investigate the events that led to the transfer of power on February 7 last year and to determine whether the transfer of power was constitutional.
Thaufeeg noted that the commission issued a report concluding their investigation and the report was publicized. He said that it is absurd that the Majlis wants to investigate a report of an investigation.
In addition to this the Press Secretary said that it will be more beneficial for the nation and the people if all three states of power continue taking their responsibilities instead of trying to influence each other.
Meanwhile, the independent investigation by CoNI reported in August 2012 that former President Mohamed Nasheed's resignation on February 7th this year was "voluntary and of his own free will" It determined that Nasheed's resignation was "not caused by any illegal coercion or intimidation.
The CoNI constituted of a 5 member panel which included a member of Nasheed's party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and nominated by Nasheed himself, plus an international legal expert appointed in consultation with international development partners. In addition, two Independent Advisers were sent from the Commonwealth and the United Nations to support the Commission. The function of the Advisers was to observe the conduct of the Commission and advise on the issues as may be required. The final report of the CoNI which was issued at end August was endorsed by the two international Advisors. The findings of the CoNI have been accepted and welcomed by all international partners, including India, the United States, the United Nations and the Commonwealth.
