Withdrawing charges against Nasheed not considered despite
Indian delegation meeting- PG
Prosecutor General Ahmed Muizz has said that the PG's Office has not considered to withdraw the charges against the former President Mohamed Nasheed despite the meeting of the Indian delegation with him.
Muizz made this remark in response to a question raised by Miadhu Daily regarding the meeting of the visiting Indian delegates who arrived in Male to "assist" Indian High Commission to resolve the situation arising out of former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed taking refuge in the Indian Mission for the eight day in a row.
"My answer is that I have not intended to or even considered to withdraw the
charges against Nasheed," he said.
When asked whether the government has made any requests to withdraw the charges or postpone it, PG Muizz said that the government has not made any such requests.
Meanwhile, opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) recently presented the Prosecutor General’s office a petition with 3000 signatures calling the PG to withdraw the criminal case against the former President Mohamed Nasheed.
In response to queries about PG Office decision regarding Nasheed’s demand to PG that his trial be postponed to 2018, an official at the PG Office yesterday told media that there was no such intention and it had not even been considered.
Nasheed’s argument is that he will win the 2013 Presidential Elections if permitted and that for elections to be free and fair he should be allowed to contest. He states that he was willing to face charges in 2018 after completing his imaginary term of office. Nasheed also claimed yesterday that foreign states would not allow his candidacy to be cancelled based on the trial. However, no such demands have been made by any foreign state or international organization yet.
