Political parties should be able to run without Public funds: President


President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan has said that it is not right to spend so much from the already tight state budget on political parties and Political .

President Dr.Waheed made this remark speaking at the ceremony held to launch the “Orchid Activity Centre” of the Qaumee Ittihad Party.

The President said that it is not necessary to spend the state budget on political parties. He said that the parties can get funds to cover the costs of their activities when the gain a good number of supporters.

“There is no extra money in the state budget to spend on political parties. If we can run the party good we can increase the number of our supporters. And with the assistance of more supporters we can maintain the party,” he said.

In addition to this the President noted that the decision made the Majlis to set a minimum number of members for a party to be registered is a violation of the constitutional right of the freedom of assembly. He said that it is against democratic values.

Furthermore, the President said that it is not possible to win the upcoming presidential election without the aid of other parties. He said that he believes that the opportunities received in the previous election will become open in the upcoming election.

President Dr. Waheed noted that the party logo of Qaumee Ittihaad represents national unity and the importance of unity for the nation to prosper. He said that Qaumee Ittihaad is not a party that revolves around an individual but rather that it is a party that works for the betterment of all people.
