Radioactive Releases in Japan Could Last Months, Experts Say
As the scale of Japan’s nuclear crisis begins to come to light, experts in Japan and the United States say the country is now facing a cascade of accumulating problems that suggest that radioactive releases of steam from the crippled plants could go on for weeks or even months.
The emergency flooding of two stricken reactors with seawater and the resulting steam releases are a desperate step intended to avoid a much bigger problem: a full meltdown of the nuclear cores in two reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. On Monday, an explosion blew the roof off the second reactor, not damaging the core, officials said, but presumably leaking more radiation.

Flight attendants call for ban on Saudi stopovers
The union for Cathay Pacific flight attendants has urged the airline to stop overnight crew stays in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, over fears for the safety of female staff. The general secretary of the Cathay Pacific Flight Attendants Union, quoted by AFP, said the demand follows an incident last month in which a man tried to force his way into the hotel room of a junior Cathay attendant. Other complaints have been made involving unwanted telephone calls to female staff also staying at the Marriott Hotel in Riyadh, the union leader added. Last month, Cathay switched its layovers to Riyadh from the Gulf state of Bahrain because of political unrest that has swept across much of the region. The union has now called for overnight stops to be moved to Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates, but is yet to receive a "positive response" from management, according to the union. In a statement, a Cathay spokeswoman said the airline was "taking this very seriously and are monitoring the situation closely to ensure that all crew are safe and well taken care of”. The hotel said it has responded to the complaints by enhancing security and adding closed-circuit television inside lifts.

No party can be created within DRP that can outrun DRP- Saleem
Spokesperson of the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Mohamed Saleem (Horafushi) has said that no party can be created within DRP that can outrun DRP. Saleem said that even if the former President of Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who has been honoured as the founding leader of DRP, form a new political party, it can never outrun and outnumber DRP. Saleem said that the majority members and branches of DRP have their utmost support to DRP leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali. DRP Spokesperson said that DRP leader Thasmeen has met leaders of some of the branches of DRP and Atoll Councilors of Lhaviyani, Noonu, Raa and Baa Atoll Councils in Naifaru last week. He added that no talks on splitting away from leader Thasmeen were expressed by them during these meetings. Although founding leader Gayoom’s spokesperson said that every member who does not accept that Gayoom is the highest authority of the party has to leave DRP, Gayoom’s close allies have been expressing thoughts of forming a new political party. Meanwhile, South Galolhu MP and President of the Youth Branch of DRP Ahmed Mahloof said that there is no reason to not make a new political party if Gayoom decides that it is time to make one. He said that the circumstances are so worse that now apparently there is no room in the party for Gayoom. He said that if the need arises it is near for Gayoom to form a new political party. Burma implicated in major oil fraud
An investigation in the Maldives has implicated the Burmese military and a number of private companies in an $US800 million money-laundering scam involving the sale of Maldivian cut-price oil. The allegations were made after the Maldivian government in March last year hired a UK-based auditing firm called Grant Thornton to investigate the corruptive practices of former president and autocrat Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who left office in 2008. The audit unearthed fudged accounts that showed that the unit prices of barrels of oil differed in invoices for different accounts, with one irregularity amounting to over $US5 million. A Maldivian government official who asked to remain anonymous told DVB that the total scale of the fraud was more than half the country’s GDP.

Brothers in corruption: Maldives and Burma

Burma’s relationship with North Korea has proved a sensational story of how autocrats share their ill-gotten gains and maniacal plans. But as the Maldives comes to grips with its own autocratic past, the scale of the former dictator’s malpractice has astonished observers: what a UK-based accounting firm found when probing the rule of Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his family was a corrupt nexus that went well beyond the white beaches of the Indian Ocean nation, and which implicates the Burmese junta in a massive international scam. The accountants, Grant Thornton, discovered that the former president of the tiny island nation was receiving a large allocation of cut-price oil from the Muslim-dominated Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) cartel, channelled through a Singaporean branch of the Maldivian State Trading Organisation (STO). The scale of the $US800 million fraud was noted by a Maldivian government official to be not significantly different to the GDP of that country, $US1.4 billion.

IMF Executive Board Concludes 2010 Article IV Consultation with Maldives
Expansionary fiscal policies in Maldives after the 2004 tsunami led to severe fiscal and external imbalances, leaving the economy vulnerable. The situation deteriorated markedly in 2008–09, as the decline in tourism which followed the global economic crisis hit the Maldivian economy hard, aggravated the imbalances, and pushed the country into recession. In response, the authorities adopted an ambitious adjustment program supported by IMF financing. The program focused on a strong fiscal adjustment, monetary tightening and a strengthening of the financial sector. After contracting by 2¼ percent in 2009, the economy rebounded strongly in 2010, on the back of a sharp recovery in tourism inflows. Real GDP growth is estimated at 4¾ percent in 2010. Inflation continues to reflect mainly international commodity price movements, increasing since mid-2009 on a year-on-year basis, and is expected to average 5 percent in 2010. The current account deficit is projected to have widened to about 32¼ percent of GDP in 2010, as the economic recovery and higher commodity prices have pushed up imports, offsetting the tourism rebound.

Taj on Swan may be left as is
The partially built mansion in Peppermint Grove owned by Indian entrepreneurs Pankaj and Radhika Oswal may remain unfinished for decades. The revelation that the so-called Taj-Mahal-on-the-Swan may be completed is sure to upset neighbours, who have complained that the Indian-inspired design was too extravagant. Many had hoped a new owner would demolish it. The home would have become the most expensive in Australia once finished, at $70 million. Construction stopped in December when the family moved to India at the same time receivers were appointed to Burrup Fertilisers. Mr Oswal said the property could be left as a construction site for his two daughters, Vasundhara and Riddhi, to eventually complete. "Yes, we might complete it, or we might just leave it as is right now, and decide, let the children complete it when they grow up," Mr Oswal said
