Next best solution is for Gayoom to make a new political party-Mahloof

South Galolhu MP and President of the Youth Branch of the main opposition Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Ahmed Mahloof has said given the current situation, the “next” best solution is for former President of Maldives and current founding leader of DRP, Dictator Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to make a new political party.

Speaking at a live programme of MNBC One last night, Mahloof said that founding leader Gayoom has done a lot of work to curb down and find a solution to the fuming internal crisis within DRP. He said that despite Gayoom’s struggle to mend the rift within the party, it has brought no good results.

“Thasmeen has hijacked DRP. Then it is best to opt for another way to bring an end to these rifts. However, founding leader Gayoom should lead it,” Mahloof said.

Mahloof said he has been in the party council earlier too and that Gayoom accepted his deliberations even though he was very young then. He said that in contrast to this, Thasmeen disregards the decisions of the party council.

Mahloof said that 2013 Presidential elections will be won in another platform consisting of major political figures.

Countering Mahloof’s statements, Maafannu Hulhangu MP Abdullah Abdurraheem said that DRP leader Ahmed Thasmeen Ali will take the oath of presidency on 11 November, 2013 after wining the presidential elections of 2013 by the Grace of Allaah. He said that it will be only possible by removing the “excess baggage”, Yamin, the reason for losing 2008 presidential elections.

Abdullah Abdurraheem said that the origin of the internal rifts within DRP is none other than founding leader Dictator Gayoom.  He further said that the support DRP members had for Gayoom has diminished over time. He said that this is evident in results of the recent local council elections. He said that Gayoom went to the larger populated islands for campaign and DRP lost in most of those islands.

Meanwhile, the news of the fuming internal crisis within DRP has been making headlines in the media for quiet sometime. The anti-Thasmeen movement now led by DRP’s founding leader Gayoom, has been continuously attempting to expose Thasmeen’s leadership lapses and defame him.

Though it was Former President, DRP founding Leader Gayoom himself who endorsed Thasmeen to be his successor in party leadership, his support for Thasmeen has been apparently lost.

However, against the background of all these mounting challenges and the volatile internal clashes, Thasmeen assured his fellow party members and supporters he will remain firm as Party Leader despite the opposition trying to oust him.
