Dhiraagu to lay Fibre Optic Submarine
Cable network system from North to South across the Maldives
Dhiraagu has signed a USD 21.7 million
contract with NEC Corporation today on the 15th March 2011, to lay a fibre optic
submarine cable network system from North to South across the entire Maldives.
This is a major milestone in the history of Maldives that would revolutionize
the landscape of telecommunication in the country.
Along with Dhiraagu’s currently established operation centres, the network will
strategically include 8 regions, connecting the whole Maldives from North to
South through a 1,017 km length fibre optic submarine cable. With the
implementation of this project, quality of service will be significantly
enhanced. It will also greatly facilitate e-health, telemedicine, e-government
and other such online services in the country. Additionally, it would bring
immense socio-economic benefits by ensuring high speed connectivity across the
entire Maldives.
It is a significant project under Dhiraagu’s programme to expand high-speed
Broadband Service across the country. Also under the programme, Dhiraagu plans
to enhance microwave network, 3G, wireless broadband services and to upgrade the
internet core network. Dhiraagu plans to invest a total of about USD 70 million
over the next 5 years, to deliver this programme across the entire Maldives.
Dhiraagu aspires to enable consumers in all islands of Maldives to enjoy high
speed internet and modern telecommunication facilities. Dhiraagu is pleased and
privileged to initiate this project for the people of Maldives and to be the
catalyst for this development.
