77 MPs are responsible for waves of street violence- Shifag Mufeed MP


Fuahmulah MP Shifag Mufeed has said that the 77 members of the Peoples’ Majlis should take the responsibility of the current waves of street violence which have resulted in loss of the life to a number of people-mostly young people and have resulted in injury to people, damage to property.

Debating on the amendment to Clemency Act, proposed by ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) member and Hoarafushi MP Ahmed Rasheed which states that death penalty should be executed by the courts if upheld by the Supreme Court, Shifag expressed concern that murder with sharp objects, gang wars and other crimes are now being conducted publicly.

Shifag noted that it has reached a situation where it is difficult for the people to live a normal life, and has become an obstacle for people to obtain the freedom and rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

“It is not former President Maumoon who should take the responsibility. It is not current President Nasheed who should take responsibility. It is not the Police who should take responsibility,” he said.

“Truth be told, regretfully, I believe that it is this honoury Majlis who should take responsibility. These 77 MPs should take the responsibility,” Shifag said.

Fuahmulah MP reiterated that the Majlis have lacked behind in handling the situation and that the Majlis should to expedite necessary bills such as the bill on the penal code, the criminal procedure bill, the evidence bill, parole bill and the bill on prohibiting threatening and using sharp objects and dangerous weapons.
