Government will pay special attention to

President Mohamed Waheed has said his
administration will pay special attention to small populations when
addressing the needs of the people. He made this statement in his
address to the people of Gaadhoo of Laamu atoll, on Friday. Expressing

of his ministers to each of the islands during this year. “We must visit
the islands and see for ourselves the well-being of our people. It is
our duty to fulfill the needs of the people as much as possible,” said
the President. Continuing in this regard, President said that regardless
of the size of the population, basic services must be provided to all
citizens. He acknowledged that providing those services and improving

Maldives Backs UN Resolution Criticising
Isreali Settlements
The Maldives has cosponsored a UN resolution condemning continued
Israeli settlement activity in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The
resolution, adopted with a vote at the UN Human Rights Council in
Geneva, states that such activity violates the fundamental human rights
of Palestinians, and also represents a barrier to a negotiated peace.
The Council also adopted a resolution, cosponsored by the Maldives,
reaffirming the Palestinian's right to self-determination, a universal
right not yet granted to Palestinians because of Israeli objections.
Speaking earlier during a debate on Palestine, Maldives Ambassador to
the UN in Geneva, Ms. Iruthisham Adam called on the international
community to fully recognise the right to Palestinians to
self-determination and to a State of their own. Without such a State,
she argued, the human rights of Palestinians will never be realised. She
also once again added Maldives voice to growing international
condemnation of illegal settlement activity in Palestine, activity which
undermines the dignity of the people and prevents a peaceful solution to
the conflict. Maldives also, at the 19th session of the Council,
cosponsored a resolution supporting the democratic and human rights
transition in Libya and extending UN support for human rights
protection. The Maldives has been a strong supporter of the new Libya in
the Human Rights Council.
MEMP travels to Ukulhas island to test
waste management equipment
Maldives Environmental Management Project (MEMP) staff have travelled to
North Alif atoll Ukulhas island to obtain information on the use of
waste management system on the island and to test the waste management
equipment being used for waste management activities. The team was
accompanied by a staff from the Environmental Protection Agency. On the
one day trip, the team tested the can crusher, plastic shredders and
generator at the Island Waste Management Centre, as well as finding out
how the waste management on the island is carried out by the council.
The equipment was handed over in 2009 to the island through the South
Ari Project. The waste management system in Ukulhas now covers
operational costs, with the system including separation of waste at
household level, and the separated plastic and iron being sold on to
resellers. The Island Council has implemented daily collection of waste
that is already separated at source from all houses for a monthly fee of
MRf 100. The visit and testing will help MEMP in developing waste
management plans for the islands of the North Region: Noonu, Raa, Baa
and Lhaviyani atolls. MEMP will be assisting the 46 inhabited islands in
the four atolls of the North Region to develop their island waste
management plans in advance of the commencement of operations of the
Regional Waste Management Facility being set up in the region in the

Govt condemns Dr. Shaheed over sanctions
calls
President Dr. Mohamed Waheed’s spokesperson, Abbas Adhil Riza has
condemned Dr. Ahmed Shaheed over his calls for international sanctions
on the Maldives. Abbas said that discussions were held at the UK
Parliament on 22 March on the developments in the Maldives, however the
government was not represented in the meeting because currently there is
no Ambassador of the Maldives to UK. He said that Dr.Shaheed and Dr.
Farhanaz Faisal participated in the meeting on behalf of the former
ruling party. He said that the MDP representatives called upon the UK
government to take international sanctions on Maldives by alleging that
the government reviled the honour of the Queen of England. Abbas

and Dr. Farhanaz for trying to harm the people and the economy of the
country. He said that the government does not revile the honour of the
Queen. He said that the government cannot be held responsible for the
speech of an individual who uses his right to freedom of expression. “MP

Trade Ministry looking at options for
legal action against MDP’s call for boycott of some local businesses
Trade Ministry looking at options for legal action against MDP call for
boycott of some local businesses, says Trade Minister Ahmed Mohamed.
Minister Ahmed said that politicizing trade in this manner may have
serious negative impacts. MDP yesterday staged a march calling upon its
supporters to boycott specific cafes, restaurants, services and
businesses whose owners it alleged were involved in its alleged coup.
Political analysts raise the question whether the businesses against
whom MDP has launched its boycott have a legal right to refuse to serve
MDP members.
MDP calls for boycott of some local
businesses
MDP calls for boycott against cafe's, restaurants, shops owned by
business people that they allege took part in what they call "a coup".
MDP yesterday staged a march against various businesses that they allege
assisted in the transfer of power from their Supremo, ex-President
Mohamed Nasheed to the current President Dr. Mohamed Waheed. The key
targets are Villa group owner Gasim Ibrahim, Champa Afeef, Mohamed
Waheedudeen, Sun Travel Siyam, Red Wave Saleem, Malla Nasir, and smaller
fry. According to analysts, while MDP Male' members can perhaps afford
to boycott some businesses given the range of choice available on Male',
it may be difficult for MDP supporters in the islands to do so. Many
islands, although they may have several corner shops, are supplied by
one or two major suppliers. Underneath the seemingly political move,
there are also economic considerations. The key beneficiaries of such a
boycott by MDP would be Nasheed's closest allies Lintel Maldives and
ex-3A, both of which hold a range of distributorships.

Finally Former President Mohamed Nasheed has indicated that MNDF Chief
Moosa Jaleel and other generals part of the alleged coup . In a leaked
audio clip, Nasheed is heard saying that, if the transfer of power was
investigated it will show that payments were made by top tourism

that Brig. Gen. Moosa Jaleel was in plain clothes that whole day as was
Gen. Shiyam. He makes fun of Jaleel, saying that Jaleel is a man who
wears uniform even in bed, so how come Jaleel was in plain clothes that
day? Although Nasheed does not directly say that his alleged payments
were made to Jaleel and top military staff, the audio shows that he is
making a clear link between his allegations of payments and his
observations on the behaviour of Jaleel and others that day. No
statements have been made by Jaleel to media regarding the events of
February 7th and the events leading to the transfer of power to Dr.
Waheed. The audio clip appears to be from a discussion after February
7th. Background noise includes those of women laughing at Nasheed's

MDP threaten to stall Majlis unless
external discussions on early elections take place
The former ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has threatened
to stall the Peoples’ Majlis unless external discussions on early
elections take place. In a press conference held yesterday, MDP
parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Salih (Iboo) said that MDP being the
largest party in Majlis can stall parliamentary proceedings till the
discussions are resumed amongst all parties in order to set a date for
early elections. Flanked by MDP MPs Sameer and Aslam, Iboo claimed that
MDP MPs could not hear President Dr. Mohamed Waheed's Address to Majlis.
However, he did not acknowledge that this could possibly be because at
the time he and other MDPs were screaming in front of the Speaker's
podium and banging water bottes together. The discussions that MDP
referred to are most probably the All Party Talks which were derailed
when MDP first obstructed Majlis opening on March 1st. President Waheed,
in his Address to Parliament, called upon all parties to resume the
talks. However, PPM Parliamentary Leader Abdulla Yameen and QP
Parliamentary Leader Riyaz Rasheed, both independently, said that it is
unlikely that their parties would support resumption of the talks, since
MDP had not met their condition of allowing Parliament to proceed
without obstruction.

Vilufushi member states that even though a commonwealth team camped near
the Parliament House, without amendments to the constitution an election
cannot be held. Further states that if Commonwealth is to bring peace
and a legal leadership in the Maldives, it should firstly try abolishing
the fear MDP has brought into the country. He asks where Commonwealth
was when illegal activities were done and continued in the previous
term. Notes that even though peace and harmony to the country is of
furthermost importance to hold an election, Commonwealth doesn’t
mind/realize this. Says that Maldives was once the English’s and is

'Why should one's family name be a
disadvantage to anyone?'
It's often said people need a famous surname to rise in politics. Your
father P M Sayeed was a well-known Congress leader - would you agree
with this view? Family background gives you a platform - but doesn't
guarantee success. A lot of people with strong family legacies contest
elections. But everyone doesn't get elected. When i contested, opposing
candidates used such arguments in campaigning as well. Yet, winning was
possible as voters knew of the hard work put in at the grassroots level.
I'd like to ask why one's family name should be a disadvantage to
anyone? Will we ban all famous lawyers, journalists, bankers, cricketers
and movie stars from letting their children enter their profession? The
Lakshadweep seat was held by the Congress from 1967 - we lost it in
2004. When i was seeking election from the constituency, it wasn't as if
my dad was gifting me his seat.

MDP cannot reach an early election by
bullying the President- JP

Jumhooree Party (JP) has said that the
opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) cannot reach an early
election by bullying President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik. JP
Council member, Fuwad Gasim said that the President does not have the
authority to hold early elections even if he wants without amending the
constitution. “It’s the Majlis that have the authority to amend the
constitution. There is no MP who represents the party of the President
therefore the President has to rely on the assistance of other parties,”
he said. “This is the reason why the President is calling to resolve
these issues through all-party talks. MDP knows this fact very well.
They are obstructing the functioning of the Majlis under their hidden
agenda,” he said. Fuwad said that although MDP finds it difficult to
stomach the truth, the reality is that MDP Supremo Mohamed Nasheed
resigned on his own will. He said that the ex-President Nasheed’s
resignation was the result of his incompetence to rule the nation. “They
know very well that they have failed. But still they persist on deluding
the people,” he said.

Maldives 'stable', says new tourism
minister
The new government of the Maldives has sought to reassure holidaymakers
that the islands remain open for business, despite ongoing
demonstrations at the ousting of the former president Mohamed Nasheed
last month, in an alleged coup. At a press conference in London this
week, Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Gafoor, the new minister for tourism, said the
situation in the country – including the capital Malé, where protests
continue to take place – was stable. Last week the Foreign Office
removed its warning against all but essential travel to Malé, although
it says that further demonstrations are “likely” and advises travellers
to avoid large gatherings. While it is generally accepted that
holidaymakers are unlikely to be caught up in any unrest, as most
resorts are found on isolated, otherwise uninhabited islands, the moral
implications of visiting the Maldives have been called into question
following the downfall of Mr Nasheed.

while speaking to media Wednesday. Riza stressed that the way forward

Gearing up for the new F1 season
Hello there? How's your winter been? I hope this blog finds you well, my
friends, and that 2012 is being kind to you. It's certainly about to get
kinder for us F1 fans as the season gets under way this weekend. My
winter flew by faster than Seb in qualifying as I juggled various TV

November there just isn't time for! Thankfully, just a couple of weeks
ago I managed to grab a week in the Maldives with my wife, and that
break will be valuable as I jump onto a treadmill that will carry us to
the end of 2012.

decision is likely to provoke fury in Afghanistan, where MPs have
demanded that the soldier be handed over to the Afghan justice system
and called on President Hamid Karzai to suspend all talks with the US
until that happens.

PPM and JP squabble over the Kaashidhoo
Parliamentary seat
Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) demands a PPM candidate for the
Kaashidhoo by-elections to be held on 14th April while Jumhooree Party
(JP) insist that Kaashidhoo is theirs since PPM have taken the
Thimarafushi nomination. JP have fielded their deputy leader Abdulla
Jabir for the Kaashidhoo by elections. PPM have requested that Jabir
contest for the seat in PPM's name, justifying this as required in order
to give PPM a seat in Majlis. However, JP is unwilling to do so. At
present, although 14 elected MPs have joined PPM, the Majlis Speaker
Abdulla Shahid (from DRP) has obstructed PPM by not recognizing their
party affiliation as valid, claiming that a party which does not have a
single member elected on its party ticket cannot be given entry into
Majlis. PPM's solution to this is to elected either a candidate for
Kaashidhoo or Thimarafushi on its ticket, thereby enabling the current
14 to then officially cross over to PPM. JP already has a Parliamentary
seat, that of its leader Gasim Ibrahim. PPM now threaten that if JP does
not oblige, they will field a separate candidate, defense lawyer Mohamed
Waheed, for the Kaashidhoo by elections.

Maldivian Democratic Party, MDP following his appointment. Saleem who
has left for Kathmandu last night to take up his new job has told Miadhu

post will face challenges in exercising his duties on an impartial and
just manner if he is a member of a political party., Saleem further
explained that it is contrary to the norms and principles of diplomatic
service to have a political affinity with any party. Saleem's
appointment as new SAARC SG came following the resignation of former

Singapore is one of the easiest airports in the world to navigate. Last
time I was here, though, I tried out the Jetquay meet and greet service
largely because it was about half the price arranging for it through the
Intercontinental as through any other hotel or arranging it directly,
and because I wanted to try it before setting my in-laws up with the
service, and also because I wanted to experience it and share that here
on the blog. There’s not any special reason that meet and greets are
needed in Singapore, but after traveling for a day or 20 hours I’m not
always in the best of sorts, it’s nice not to feel the need to think
about what you’re doing, having someone with a sign with your name on
it, a nice, comfortable, and spacious car for you, as well as a cold
towel and a bottle of water, can be well worth the cost even when that’s
twice as expensive or a little more than a taxi.

he could have given assistance to former President Mohamed Nasheed if he
had informed him on his decision to resign before resigning. In an
interview to Sun, President Dr. Waheed said that President Nasheed did
not share with him anything about a decision to resign. He said that he
did not call him and that if he had called him and informed him that
President Nasheed was going to resign due to any kind of compulsion, he
would certainly have refused to take up the position of presidency.
“President Nasheed did not maintain that good a relationship with me. I
think it is a duty of President Nasheed’s to call me and inform me of
his decision to resign,” he said. The President said that he came to
know, later, that the former President consulted with a number of other
people, phoned and spoke with some, and conducted a cabinet meeting as
well. “I was not invited to that meeting either. I did not know about
that meeting until I saw the members of the cabinet at the President’s

said. President Dr. Waheed said that he did not try to call President
Nasheed himself, but he tried to contact Moosa Jaleel, then Chief of

Public is best served by putting national

Thasmeen

Leader of the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP)
Ahmed Thasmeen Ali has said that the public is best served by putting
national interest first, not by enforcing political stands through
force. Speaking on local TV on the issue of MDP obstruction of
Parliament and Speaker Shahid's actions that day, Thasmeen said that
national interest would not have been achieved by holding Parliament by
force that day. However, he said, all sides have to respect the powers
vested in the institutions of governance, and understand that these must
be used when the interests of the public are at stake. Thasmeen
concluded by expressing his hope that MDP would not try and repeat its
stunt at Parliament again, saying that the Speaker must hold the next
scheduled session even if by force, as opportunity had been given for
MDP to seek reconciliation to its demands outside Parliament as it had
demanded.
Fantastic Photo Competition As Kurumba
Maldives Commemorates 40 Years
Kurumba Maldives (http://www.kurumba.com),
the first resort in the Indian Ocean archipelago of the Maldives,
celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year. Opened by four young
Maldivians on an uninhabited coconut plantation island in October 1972,
Kurumba (it means coconut) marked the beginning of the tourist industry
in the country. At that time the Maldives was isolated with limited
contact with the outside world and no telephones, mains electricity or
water, few vehicles and no paved roads, and only a small airstrip built
by volunteers. Kurumba began with 30 huts built of coral and thatched
with coconut leaves; the first guests were barefoot backpackers in
search of sand, sea and sun. Meals were prepared informally by the
Maldivian hosts. Today the resort is still Maldivian owned and managed,
with 180 luxurious accommodation units, including a Royal Residence,
Presidential Suites and Pool Villas (http://www.kurumba.com/acc-pool.html),

Snap elections cannot be held by stymieing
the Majlis- Yaameen
Parliamentary Group Leader of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)
Abdullah Yaameen has said that no matter what the Maldivian Democratic
Party (MDP) does, snap elections cannot be held through force and by
stymieing the President from addressing the Peoples’ Majlis thereby
obstructing the functioning of the Majlis. Yaameen noted that there is
no legal basis for snap elections and that the required amendments in
the constitution to facilitate such an election can only be negotiated
within the Majlis. He said that therefore MDP will not be given the
opportunity to force elections through civic disobedience and disruption
of peace and harmony of the country. “There is no legal basis for snap
elections in the constitution. If such an election is to be held, then
the constitution should be amended. But MDP is obstructing this by
obstructing the Majlis,” he said. Yaameen called the former ruling party
to stop instigating violence and rousing emotions and to pursue peaceful
resolution through Parliament and through the all party Peace Talks. He
said that the talks held so far have been of no avail because of the
stubbornness of MDP. Meanwhile, Political analysts posit that the
objective of the street riots and civic disobedience organized by
Nasheed is not a snap election. "Even Nasheed can see that snap
elections are not possible", one senior statesman observed. "His real
objective in making these allegations and running street riots is to
rouse people's emotions in order to retain core support for himself
until an election, a possibility for the year's end", he said.

India Feels Maldives Tremors
India is in a spot of bother over the Maldives, especially with growing
signs of the Wahabisation of the Indian Ocean island nation. Just days
after Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai returned from his latest
visit, his second in a fortnight, supporters of ousted Maldives
President Mohamed Nasheed blocked current President Mohammed Waheed from
opening parliament. India and others will be monitoring events with
great interest, especially as according to a press statement from
India’s External Affairs Ministry, representatives of all political
parties in the Maldives, with whom Mathai engaged individually and
collectively, agreed to India playing a role as a “facilitator” in the
country’s political upheaval. This is quite a responsibility – and a key
opportunity – for India, one which it can’t afford to ignore. But the
Indian path is also laden with plenty of thorns and far fewer roses.

It is becoming obvious that MDP is not
democratic at all- Imthiyaz
“Members will come to know why I quit the Party. Though MDP claim to be
the most democratic party, it is becoming more and more obvious that the
Party (MDP) isn’t democratic at all,” says Mohamed Imthiaz. Mohmed
Imtiaz was the Deputy Chairperson (Administration) of the Maldives
Democratic Party until he quit recently. Functioning as the DCA,
Chairman of the Campaign Committee and member of the National Council,
Imthiaz (aka Inthi) also played a key role in bringing the Party to
where it is today. “I was the DCA when Chairperson (CPA) Ms. Maria Didi
resigned. In the line of hierarchy I would be responsible for functions
until members elect a CPA as I was the incumbent Deputy Chairperson.
However Reeko Moosa Manik was appointed CPA in contradiction to party
regulation” – Inthi said. Reeko Moosa Manik is seen by many as a radical
politician whose career is devoted to vengeance on former President
Maumoon Abdul gayoom. He is also alleged to have been involved in many
corrupt business dealings with Nasheed’s administration from which he
contributed enormously to party coffers. Inthi said many MDPiers are
continuing to call him inquiring why he resigned, and that he is happy
that the majority believes in his reasons. Inthi is firm in his belief
that sooner or later MDP membership will start leaving the party for the
same reasons he quit.
