Adhaalath Party condemns the unlawful acts of MDP MPs and
Protesters
Adhaalath Party has called on the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) leadership to respect the constitution of the Maldives and immediately stop preventing President Dr Mohamed Waheed from addressing the first session of the People’s Majlis yesterday.
In a press release issued by the party, Adhaalath party noted that the President has a constitutional obligation to address the Parliament and preventing him from doing so is unlawful and against all democratic norms.
“Freedom of assembly is a Constitutional right in the Maldives. However, we regret to note that what we are seeing today is a different picture in which MDP MPs and supporters are obstructing the law enforcement authorities. We have seen on public TV that MDP MPs removed the national flag and parliament flag from the parliament house and removed the seat designated for the President inside the parliament house. Moreover, we have seen MDP supporters terrorising the public with iron rods and stones and other material as weapons against the law enforcement officers. Several law enforcement officers have been severely injured so far,” the party said.
“MDP MPs have been continuously inciting violence in the recent rallies held by the Party. An MDP MP, Ali Waheed called for the assassination of President Waheed in a rally held last night. We strongly condemn the incitement of violence and unlawful acts being committed by MDP MPs and supporters. We stress that the way forward for a long lasting solution for our current political stalemate is through the parliament and through dialogue between all political parties and within the laws of the country,” Adhaalath Party said in their press release.
