President Waheed says he would not have taken oath of office if former President told he was forced to resign

President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has told Aljazeera International that he would not have taken the oath of office if the former President Mohamed Nasheed told him that Nasheed was forced to resign.  Speaking to Aljazeera's Fauziya Ibrahim in an interview on Friday President Waheed said the former President and he were not talking to one another except on official business.

President Waheed in the interview denied former President Nasheed's accusation that he was forced to resign and explained President Nasheed resigned voluntarily before the camera, Nasheed also met with his cabinet before announcing his resignation, some of his ministers advised him not to resign, but he decided to resign, Waheed mentioned.

But after 24 hours, former President Nasheed changed his mind and announced he was forced to resign. President Waheed explained in the interview.

Referring to the 2008 presidential election, President Waheed told Aljazeera that Nasheed had to bring other parties to win the election. But soon after the elections Nasheed decided to go back on his words and got everybody out of the government.,

What we saw progressively after that was a gradual reversal of democracy. He started doing things that were unconstitutional like locking up of the Supreme Court, arbitrary arresting of political leaders and detaining them without charge, and finally we had this bizarre situation where the President ordered the military to arrest a serving judge, President Waheed told Fauziya Ibrahim.

The President also told Aljazeera that he objected to Nasheed's actions and advised  Nasheed it was not the way to go about it. But Nasheed does not take anyone's advice, he is not somebody who takes peoples' advice, President Waheed said.
