Rebellion of the MDP MPs in the Majlis should be
investigated- Dr. Saud
Council member of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Dr. Mohamed Saud has said that the actions by the MDP to impede the opening of the People's Majlis are actions of rebellion and that the authorities should investigate it.
Dr. Saud said that the imperative question now is why there is no investigation of this rebellion and what is it that the Speaker is afraid of that he is not calling for an investigation.
He said that if the Speaker delays the investigation then his integrity is suspicious. He said that the three powers of the state are separated in the Maldives and if any people try to cripple any one of the powers than that act will be regarded as a rebellion. He said that the people and the whole world has witnessed that what the MPs of the former ruling party did in the Majlis was none other than a rebellion against the legitimate President of the country.
“Majlis is the law-making power of the state. No authority can enter the Majlis to investigate any matter unless the Speaker gives the approval. Therefore, in view of the rebellion of the MDP on Thursday, the Speaker is obliged invite the respected authorities to investigate this matter. There is no excuse. All of this happened in front of the Chief Justice, the Prosecutor General, the people and the whole world witnessed the incidents of Thursday,” he said.
Dr. Saud also said that it is unacceptable that the President was obstructed from addressing the Majlis and eventually the session was cancelled. He said that it is already late to investigate this and to prosecute all who are responsible for impeding the President from giving the address.
Furthermore, Dr. Saud said that the MPs of MDP have disgraced the honour of the Majlis by their lowly acts. He noted that they entered the Majlis Chambers ahead of the scheduled session and occupied the Speaker's Chair and podium. He said that they then tore down the national flag behind the Speaker's Chair, took the Speaker's Chair out of the Chambers, sang and danced on the Speaker's podium, and obstructed the Speaker from entering the Chambers.
Dr. Saud said that no one who loves the nation will ever accept these actions perpetrated by the MPs of ex-President Mohamed Nasheed’s party.
