I will resign if the investigation concludes that the transfer of power was illegal – President

President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has said that he will resign if the investigation of the National Enquiry Commission concludes that the events surrounding the transfer of power on the 7th February does involve illegal matters.

The President said this in an interview to the local TV station, VTV last night. President said that if the National Enquiry Commission concludes that the power was transferred unconstitutionally then there would be no need for an early election and former President Mohamed Nasheed would be reinstated.

President Dr. Waheed said that even though the current government is legitimate but if the opposition wants to change the government by holding early elections then that can be done through the Peoples’ Majlis by amending the constitution. He said that he is open for that and he welcomes such an initiative.

“I do not have the authority to hold early elections. That can be done by the Majlis,” he said.

The President noted that the former President Nasheed disregards the authority of the elected leaders of his own party and he always wants lead a group of people on the streets. “That is how he wants it done always,” he said.

President Waheed also said that the MDP cannot break the agreement made between his party and them in 2008. He said that the only minister allocated for a member of his party was sacked by Nasheed without prior notice or discussion. “Since that time we had no major connection,” he said.
