Police dismantle rally at Lonuziyaarai area


Police took up measures to stop the conspired attacks on state and private property rooting from Henveiru Lonuziyaarai area.

According to the Police, these measures are being taken in light of the incidents of violence which took place in the demonstrations this morning while the police were securing the green zone set around the Peoples’ Majlis area. Apart from state and private property, local media and news officials acting at the scene were also attacked in the unrest.

The Police found A 20 liter container, full of suspected locally brewed liquor, inside one of the tents at Lonuziyaarai kolhu and  unopened alcoholic beverages were siezed. 

In a media briefing held at Iskandar Building tonight, MPS shares with the public, details of the special operation being carried out in Lonuziyaarai Kolhu yesterday. 

Superintendent of Police Ahmed Mohamed said that the peaceful protest turned violent after protesters tried to break through police lines and started assaulting officers with pavement bricks and sharp weapons.

In the violent protest today, 11 officers suffered injuries, and 1 officer who suffered serious head injuries was treated at IGMH and sent abroad later tonight for further treatment.

SP Ahmed Mohamed assured the public that Police would continue to maintain peace and order.

Police informed that 92 were arrested yesterday, from protesters that turned violent, damaging public property, assaulting officers, and obstruction of police duties.

According to the Police, among the suspects arrested today, 14 tested positive for narcotics, so far.
