MDP might have to take much stricter measures- Zaki

Former President Mohamed Nasheed’s Special Envoy Ibrahim Hussein Zaki has said that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) compromise on their stand because other parties are compromising and he said that if this is not the case the party perhaps will have to take much stricter measures.

Zaki said that if the other parties do not respect the ideology of the MDP then it might have very bad consequences and it might instigate guerilla type civil wars as in some countries.

“Truth be told, a civil war might start. In some countries when the people are deprived of their rights they go underground threatening the country’s security and safety. They resort to guerilla warfare,” he said.

Zaki said that the Maldives is now caught up in a political turbulence which threatens the safety of the people. He asserted that all political parties should take the responsibility for it.

Zaki said that all political parties participating in the ‘All Party Talks’ are taking very strict standings. He underscored the importance of compromising if the parties want to go for a better understanding to solve the current crisis.

In this regard, answering a query raised by Miadhu Daily, Zaki said that it is time for all the political leaders to sacrifice some of their agendas for the sake of this nation.

“We are calling to hold an election within this year. So why not the party leaders and the President consult this among them and come to a conclusion on the date of the election? Then we would not obstruct the functioning of the Peoples’ Majlis,” he said.

Meanwhile, Political analysts and leading lawyers believe that the only solution to the Country’s political crisis is for MDP to accept acknowledge the supremacy of the Constitution, withdraw from the violence they continue to breed on the streets of Male’ and prepare themselves to challenge their opposition to win the 2013 Presidential election like a civilized political party.
One analyst when on to say, “Nasheed blundered from the moment he stepped in to politics – from activist to party leader to President. Based on the Country’s experience of Nasheed’s leadership style, the Maldives can simply forget any peace in the Country so long as he continues to exist in the equation”
