Vice ring supplying Lankan girls to the
Maldives exposed
A case of trafficking Sri Lankan girls to the Maldives for prostitution
has been busted by the Police. The detection came on information
received by the Special Investigations Unit of the Mirihana Police when
a brothel operating in the Pannipitiya area was raided. OIC of the Unit
IP H.N.B. Jayasinha, who led the raid, told the Sunday Times that, on
surveillance carried out on the brothel, they found that the clients
were accepted by appointment. Initially, a WPC decoy made contact with
the brothel, wanting to join the prostitution ring. Thereafter, police
decoys had been used to raid the place and five girls and the manageress
who was known in the area as ‘Pannipitiya aunty’ arrested. He said that
during the investigations it was revealed that, every month, two to
three girls were sent to the Maldives on tourist visas, and were
employed as prostitutes in the islands off Male. “They were usually
accompanied by a man, to ensure the girls did not escape, but returned
to Sri Lanka”, he said. Investigations also revealed that this
trafficking of prostitutes to the Maldives had been in operation for the
past six years, with details regarding the local as well as the foreign
agents also being uncovered. Meanwhile, at Pannipitiya, though only six
persons were arrested, a wider network was found to be in operation.
Among those involved was a man who had provided his 19-year-old wife for
prostitution, he said. The six persons arrested, who were residents of
Galle, Kandy, Anuradhapura and Mahiyangana, have been remanded till
October 31.
Maldives praises carbon tax
ABC Radio Australia
The Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed says he thinks the Australian
parliament's decision to implement a carbon tax, will have an impact at
the next climate change talks in Durban. He's says Australia is taking
'brave steps'. Mr Nasheed also says Australia should have a
representative on the U-N security council, though he argues it should
be a permanent member. Australia is vying for a non-permanent seat for
the 2013-14 term, a vote on it is expected around this time next year.
The Maldivian President has been a prominent voice in the global debate
on lowering carbon emissions, as he argues his nation is already
experiencing climate change.

Maldives adopts new tourism slogan and
logo
The Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation (MMPRC) recently revealed the
country's new tourism slogan and logo, after over a year-long
consultation and design process, involving industry and government.
According to a release, the new slogan is 'Maldives - Always Natural',
which is accompanied by a logo highlighting the country's unique natural
characteristics. "The slogan and logo are designed to underscore the
outstanding natural beauty of the Maldives, which tourists from all
segments of the market consistently rate as one of their main reasons
for visiting the country," said Thoyyib Mohamed, Chairperson, MMPRC. The
slogan and logo's environmental theme is also designed to support the
Maldives' fishing industry: sustainable, pole and line caught tuna is
the country's second biggest export, after tourism. Dozens of tourism
industry stakeholders were consulted, as well as the general public,
before the final slogan and logo were designed. The slogan and logo were
formally approved during a cabinet meeting, which was chaired by
President Nasheed. "The previous slogan was over 11 years old and we
believe the new slogan and logo better represents the Maldives of today,
as well as tomorrow," said Simon Hawkins, Managing Director of the MMPRC.
The MMPRC commissioned an open tender for a private company to
investigate, research, design and create the slogan and logo. This
tender was won by 'QUO KEEN' of Bangkok and London. David Keen, CEO of
QUO KEEN said, "'We have created a brand that stands for the Maldivian
people, for tourism and for all of industry. The slogan Always Natural
talks to the people of the Maldives, to sustainability and to the
ultimate tourism experience. The logo has been hand-crafted to define
the natural elements of the country formed in a thumb print." "The MMPRC
is delighted with the end result and we look forward to proudly
communicating the new brand to the world," added Hawkins.

Sri Lankan Rights Abuses Obstruct Trade

TORONTO, Oct 29, 2011 (IPS) - Despite the crossfire of Canadian
accusations of human rights violations by Sri Lanka at the end of its

battered South Asian country aims to bolster its trading relationship
with Canada and increase foreign direct investment. A Sri Lankan trade

Montreal in the first trade-related push regarding Canada since 2009,
which saw the end of nearly three decades of war between the Liberation
Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan army. "We have to work

The Maldives: a lazy life in fast times
Do you like life in the fast lane, on the go 24/7, running with the fast
crowd? Or do you prefer the subtler pleasures of life in the slow lane?
At Six Senses Laamu, the latest luxury resort to open in the Maldives,
you get a little bit of both. Outwardly, the pace of life is super-slow.
Most of the thatched wooden villas are perched on stilts over the sea,
like private islands, remote from civilisation. It's like living in a
traditional Asian fishing village, predating the arrival of the motor
car. When we were there, the sea beneath our bedroom was so millpond
still we were hardly conscious of it. Honeymooners strolled arm in arm
under the palm trees. Birds glided over the blue waters, their wings
barely flapping. Even the few clouds seemed stationary, like stage props
suspended over a cardboard sea. There was an air of primordial calm - as
befits one of the most pristine holiday destinations in the world.
Nobody ran, nobody shouted, nobody broke a sweat. Why would you? The
island is tiny, less than a kilometre long. It is a pocket-sized
paradise, outside time, with barely a hundred guests, all playing at
being Robinson Crusoe. The snorkellers glided so lazily through the
water that they look as if they have fallen asleep. At the beautifully
appointed spa, with peerless views out to sea, some of the guests did
fall asleep, soothed by soft fingers and salt breezes. The well-drilled
resort staff were like so many oriental Jeeveses, appearing noiselessly
at your elbow, just when you needed them.

Libyan leader promises to uphold Islamic
law
The National Transitional Council (NTC) has declared the liberation of
Libya eight-months after the uprising against Muammar Gaddafi's 42-year
rule began. Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the leader of the NTC, kneeled in
prayer after taking the stand in a celebration in Benghazi on Sunday and
promised to uphold Islamic law. Thousands of people in Kish Square sang
the national anthem and waved flags, both of which date back to the
monarchy which Gaddafi overthrew in a 1969 coup. "We as a Muslim nation
have taken Islamic sharia (law) as the source of legislation, therefore
any law that contradicts the principles of Islam is legally nullified,"
Jalil told the crowd.

coercion and life threats. Faiz said that the independency, removal of
all undue influences and the protection of the honour of the judges are
from the most important aspects in in strengthening judicial integrity,

the Iranian government has not yet given him permission to enter the

transmitted to the 193 members of the UN General Assembly by UN
Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, is a devastating indictment of what's
going on in Iran," said AJC Executive Director David Harris. "He has

challenge the suffocating doctrine of Iran's leaders, including
political dissidents, environmental activists, students, journalists,

Floating Golf Paradise Planned for
Maldives
Tourism may well get a boost in the Maldives thanks to the planned
construction of the world's first floating island golf paradise. The
Maldives will be the location of the world’s first floating golf course.
The small island nation is hosting this ambitious project with a
development cost estimated at $500 million. The golf course will be
comprised of three linked islands with a conservation center as well as
200 villas spread over 45 smaller private islands. It goes without
saying that a floating golf course would naturally have some pretty
impressive features and this one doesn’t fail to impress. For instance,
traveling from island to island may seem difficult, but it’s made easy
thanks to a series of underwater tunnels that will connect the islands
via a central clubhouse, allowing golfers to travel with ease
underwater. Another network will connect the various holes throughout
the floating course, as well as provide access to the hotels scattered
around the complex. The floating golf course is being design by
Waterstudio.NL. and engineered by Dutch Docklands with the Troon Golf
Company taking over operational responsibilities once the course becomes
operational in 2013.

Commanding Officer of Southern Area, Brigadier General Ibrahim Didi has
said that the support of foreign countries to ensure foolproof security
during the 17th SAARC Summit to be held in Addu Atoll on November 10-11
was not requested from the foreign countries because the Armed Forces of
Maldives are not capable enough to monitor the security of the summit.
Speaking to the media, Ibrahim Didi said that the support was requested
to strengthen the ties between Maldives and the foreign countries.
Brigadier General Ibrahim Didi said that the support of Sri Lankan army
does not mean that the internal security is left at the sole hands of
the foreign party. He said that there is no problem in such assistance
under the military understanding between the two countries. “I do not
believe that this assistance mean that it is leaving the independency
and sovereignty of the nation at the hands of foreign parties. This just
shows nothing but the friendly relations between the two countries,” he
said.

The Green President
Almost exactly one year ago, I sat with President Nasheed of the
Maldives in the shade of coconut palms on the blue lagoon island of
Soneva Fushi, where the sustainable tourism resort group Six Senses was
founded in 1995. I listened intently as he explained his vision of the
Maldives becoming the world’s first fossil fuel free country. I returned
to the Maldives last week to join a handful of sustainability leaders
and visionaries, including President Nasheed himself, for the SLOWLIFE
symposium, hosted by Six Senses The soft spoken and handsome 44-year-old
Nasheed has risen onto the world stage by calling for urgent global
action to address climate change through bold moves to embrace renewable
energy–now. If he succeeds in making the Maldives a carbon-neutral
country by 2020, as he has declared, this tiny island nation and its big
thinking leader (who was jailed and banished to a remote island by the
previous autocratic ruler for leading a democracy campaign) may go down
in history as the country that signaled the turning point when the world
finally began to move away from a near total dependence on pumping crude
for energy.

Maldives in Peril: From the SLOWLIFE
symposium
There is no place more apt to engage in heavy-hitting conversation about
the future of Planet Ocean than the heart of the small island nation of
the Maldives. It is a place many have heard of but few could pick out on
a map. Made up of twelve hundred islands and atolls, most pancake flat,
the highest reaches no more than five feet above sea level making the
Maldives the lowest country on earth. Only two hundred of the islands
are inhabited by roughly 320,000 people. It is an always hot,
exceedingly beautiful, Muslim country stretching about 600 miles from
north to south in the heart of the Indian Ocean off the tip of Sri
Lanka. In terms less geographic the Maldives is also ground zero for
assessing the impacts of climate change. As the earth's temperature
continues to heat up, impacting sea surface temperatures in particular,
the Maldives is at incredible risk of both rising sea levels and
increased frequency and violence of storms.

China's stepped up moves in Maldives worry
India
Alarm bells are ringing afresh in the Indian security establishment over
renewed efforts by China to expand its footprint in Maldives, even as
New Delhi and Beijingcontinue with their strategic shadow-boxing all
across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). With China poised to establish a
full-fledged embassy at Maldives, strategically located southwest of
India astride major sea lanes in IOR, officials say Beijing has stepped
up its "lobbying'' to bag a couple or more of crucial development
projects in the 1,190-island archipelago. China, in particular, seems
interested in developing Ihavandhoo and Maarandhoo Islands, with
transhipment ports among other things, as well as grabbing a piece of
action in the development of the country's second international airport
