Dr. Jamsheed queries on the state of Health Care System

Former Director General of Public Health Services, Dr Ahmed Jamsheed Mohamed has raised questions regarding the state of the Health Care System of Maldives.

Speaking at DhiTV, Dr. Jamsheed said that questions are raised regarding the state of the Health Care System because those who are responsible do not seem to know what is happening in the health sector. He said that it is questionable whether the Health Ministry knows of the true state that the health service system has reached today.

Dr. Jamsheed said that many people point at President Mohamed Nasheed’s own confession that the health care system has failed because the government has failed to provide an efficient health care system.

Dr. Jamsheed also said that this deteriorated state of the system has also resulted in foreign doctors from not coming to Maldives. He also said that that foreign doctors are decreasing also because of the increase in theft, looting and also because of they are compelled to buy dollars at a high rate in the black market.

Furthermore, he said that locals who have efficient academic qualifications in the health sector do not have enough opportunities to join the service. He said that the opportunities are narrowed down and they face many challenges. He said that the Health Corporations fail to provide these individuals with good opportunities.

“When they cannot efficiently serve from within the government or from within these health corporations then they will move on to a different direction,” he said.

Meanwhile, in view of the current state of health care system, Dr. Jamsheed said in his blog, “Health of the people should be the primary focus and there need to be holistic ‘health’ measures and policies in place. As the US Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius recently said ‘The biggest change we can make isn’t how we provide health care, – its when. Right now, we have a sick care system, and we need to invest in a health care system.’”
