Minister doesn’t have the authority to pay the debts of a private company- DQP

Deputy President of the opposition Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP), Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has said that the Finance Minister has no authority or power to pay the debts of private Finance companies.

In view of the reports that the Ministry of Finance paid 7.3 million Rufiyaa from the contingency budget passed by the Peoples’ Majlis for the year 2009 to pay the debts of a private company, Dr. Jameel said that this is an act of corruption committed by the then Finance Minister Ali Hashim.

Dr. Jameel also strongly criticized the current Minister of Finace, Ahmed Inaz and claimed that he is from those Ministers who committed most of the acts of corruption under the MDP government.

Recently DQP called for the resignation of Minister Inaz accusing him of being the main reason for the downfall of the economy of Maldives. The party said that the economy has still not recovered because of the stubborn politics of Minister Inaz.

DQP raised fifteen points against the Minister and said that every wrong step taken by the Finance Ministry is concluded as slips by the Ministry. The party noted the incident regarding the documents sent by the Ministry to the Finance Committee mentioning that MRF 400000 were given from the contingency budget to the now defunct media association. The party said that the Minister remained silent even when the whole media was reviled because of this blunder of the Ministry.

DQP also said that the Finance Minister has not taken any consideration to the state of the people when the dollar rate is raised high and when the Maldivian currency is devalued. And the party said that Minister Inaz has repeatedly refused to grant the fuel subsidies to the fishermen even though this subsidy was allocated in the state budget passed by the Peoples’ Majlis for this year.
