Which was your best holiday?
My sister and I went to Cocoa Island in the Maldives and it was absolutely stunning. It was literally heaven on earth. The water was a bright azure blue, completely, crystal clear and the sky was exactly the same colour. It was just astonishing. The sand was a fine white powder and the service was impeccable too and even though we were there when it was meant to be crowded, I still only saw two couples per day on the island, which is tiny. I don’t know how they managed it but it was quite amazing. We had a little stilted room where we’d go down on to our patio area overlooking the water and we’d see dolphins at sunrise and sunset. It was absolutely beautiful. It was just perfect. I was depressed when I came back.

Rapid rise in wildfires in large parts of Canada
Large forest regions in Canada are apparently about to experience rapid change. Based on models, scientists can now show that there are threshold values for wildfires just like there are for epidemics. Large areas of Canada are apparently approaching this threshold value and may in future exceed it due to climate change. As a result both the area burnt down annually and the average size of the fires would increase, write the researchers of the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and the University of Michigan in the December issue of the journal The American Naturalist. The strategies for combating wildfires in large parts of Canada should therefore be reconsidered.

It is now apparent that 23 Dec Protest is a political scheme- Zuhair

Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair has said that now it is apparent to the people that the nationwide protests arranged by Civil Society Coalition and opposition political parties for the 23rd of December were not sincere expressions of religious devotion, but rather a political scheme. Zuhair stated that the Civil Society Coalition is organizing the protest by publicizing their decisions after consultations in a committee. He said that the coalition also is heard to have their own spokesperson to update the media regarding the protest. “We are informed that they are arranging everything in a very organized manner. And selected individuals from them face the media to update on their arrangements. Last night we have seen that the party of the former President have announced certain conditions on behalf of the protest, if followed by the government, the (23 December) protest would be stopped. We do not know when and where this was finalized. I believe that it is the Civil Society Coalition that should decide on the matters related to the protest. So when PPM came up on the media on behalf of the Civil Society Coalition, then the reality of the protest is exposed,” he said. Zuhair said that the ruling party did not stage any counter protests against the protests held previously by the Civil Society Coalition. However, he said that the protest to be held in the coming Friday is very different from their earlier protests. Meanwhile, Press Secretary said on Monday: “Former President Gayoom, the Adhaalath Party and religious extremists are whipping up hatred, intolerance and xenophobia for political purposes. They hope to topple the government from the streets because they can’t defeat it through the ballot box.”

India-Pakistan ties: A year of building trust
New Delhi: "Trust, but verify." Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's watchword on re-engaging Pakistan found traction in 2011 and saw the troubled post-26/11 ties turning a corner, with the leaders of both countries resolving to write "a new chapter" in bilateral relations. If 2010 was a year of failed expectations, with the Thimphu spirit dissolving in thin air after talks between the foreign ministers collapsed in Islamabad in July last year, 2011 picked up some of the broken threads to weave together a new narrative of hope and an implicit subtext that trust placed in the revived peace process will be borne out by verification. In February, just when many thought that the Thimphu spirit of reducing trust deficit was dead, the foreign secretaries of India and Pakistan engaged in some quiet diplomacy in the Bhutanese capital on the sidelines of a SAARC meeting and decided to resume the stalled peace process.

Extremists is a matter of grave concern: Zuhair

Press Secretary Mohamed Zuhair has said that extremism is a matter of concern for the government even if the extremists are few in number. Speaking to Miadhu Daily, Zuhair said that the slogans posted on the official website of the December 23 mass protest raises concern.  “It should be noted that the implementation of the law is through the courts of law. There is opportunity for bloodshed and chaos if a few extremists take the law to their hands. And if such people exist, controlling them would be utterly difficult,” he said. Zuhair said that he believes that there might be sincere scholars and other people who are participating in the protest organized by the Civil Society Coalition. He said that it is possible that some of the religious protestors are protesting for a good cause. "However, if extremist fringe people infiltrate the protest, they would be uncontrollable. Even the sincere scholars participating in the protest could not have an influence on them. This is how it has happened elsewhere in the world,” he said. Meanwhile, the opposition Adhaalath Party and Civil Society Coalition assured that the protest would be a peaceful demonstration held within the confines of the constitution and law. They said that no violence has ever been reported from any of their past demonstrations.

Facing jail: Hind Ahmas, left, could be sentenced to two years in prison for wearing a banned Islamic head covering in France
A 32-year-old mother from France is set to become the first woman ever to be sent to prison for wearing an Islamic veil. Hind Ahmas refuses to accept the legitimacy of a Paris court which has ordered her to spend 15 days learning her civic duties. She was sentenced by magistrates in Meaux, a Paris suburb, yesterday – after being arrested wearing an outlawed veil outside the Elysee Palace in the French capital on April 11. That was shortly after Nicolas Sarkozy’s government introduced a ban on all forms of Islamic head coverings, including the niqab and the burka. Ahmas was not allowed into the hearing at Meaux Criminal Court because she refused to remove her face covering. But prosecutors made it clear to her lawyer, Gilles Devers, that Ahmas now faces two years in prison and a £27,000 fine. ‘There is no possibility of me removing the veil,’ Ahmas said. ‘I’m not taking it off. The judge needs citizenship lessons, not me.’ Ahmas, who has already refused to pay a fine of around £100 for wearing a veil on another occasion, intends to take her case to the European Court of Human Rights. She has launched a pressure group, Do Not Touch My Constitution, along with Kenza Drider, another veil wearer who wants to run for president in the Spring. New law: Ahmas, 32, pictured with would-be presidential candidate Kenza Drider, is taking her case to the European Court of Human Rights. If Ahmas does become the first woman in the world to go to prison for wearing a veil, then it will be seen as a huge propaganda coup for Islamic-rights campaigners. Mr Sarkozy said the ban on head coverings was not aimed at persecuting Muslims, but merely to make France a more tolerant, inclusive society. When it was introduced, he said the ban was aimed at stopping criminals – from terrorists to shoplifters – disguising their faces from security staff and CCTV. But the sight of a young mother being led away to the cells merely because she refuses to take off her veil will cause outrage around the world. Mr Devers said the veil ban was ‘unconstitutional’, while senior police officers have told judges that it is unenforceable without persecuting women. France became the first country in Europe to outlaw the veil, while similar legislation has since been passed in Belgium and Holland. One has been mooted in Britain by a number of politicians, including Conservative backbenchers, but there are no immediate plans to introduce one.

If we're not the place, we will lose out, and they will move on. But so far we are successful, and the future is bright. The Maldives are part of a trend of Chinese sampling higher-end, more remote spots--Fiji added flights to Hong Kong two years ago, switching its focus from Japan, where the market had leveled off. Do you expect the number of Chinese visitors to hit a ceiling or keep rising?

The Durban Event
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change recently concluded in Durban, South Africa, was a massive gathering of (mostly) like-minded souls. Actually, it was the 17th of such gatherings, hence abbreviated as COP17. You may remember some of the earlier venues: Bali, Cancun, Copenhagen, Rio, Kyoto, etc. Among the 7,000+ (excluding media) registered participants of COP17, governments of most countries and lesser bodies were well represented. Environment Canada alone sent 25 or so representatives. However, countries that hope to extract “guilt money” from other nations via the carbon-dioxide global warming hoax, were most heavily in attendance. On a per capita basis, some of the Pacific island nations, which claim to be in danger of drowning from supposedly rising ocean levels but have steadily increasing populations, had the highest number of delegates. Table 1 below provides some insights.

But India and China are jockeying for influence in the Maldives, a tiny country of 1,200 islands scattered in the northern Indian Ocean. In the Maldives’ capital, Male’, there’s a new embassy in town. China is the first and only country outside of South Asia with a delegation in the country. With fewer than 400,000 people, the Maldives ranks just 179th in the world for GDP. But the Chinese love it. For a variety of reasons.

President expresses concern over death threats to anti-Islamic activists

President Mohamed Nasheed has expressed his concern over the alleged death threats of “December 23 Mass protestors” to the anti-Islamic activists in Maldives. In response to an alleged death threat which was mistakenly uploaded on the official website of the December 23 mass protest organized by the Civil Society Coalition as one of the slogans of the protest, President Nasheed said that he should be killed first to kill any Maldivian. The President made this remark at a public rally of the ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), held in front of M. Fehige. This is a very serious matter. No Maldivian has the right to issue religious verdicts to kill any other Maldivian,” he said. Meanwhile, the website has openly stated that the alleged death threat was a slogan sent by some supporters of the protest from the people and was uploaded mistakenly. The religious organization condemned the government for not taking any action against the few apostates who openly advocated for freedom of religion under the guise of calling for the protection of human rights in the Maldives. “We request the head of the government of Maldives Mohamed Nasheed to take immediate action against these individuals who violated the rights of Islam and violated the laws of this state by advocating the alleged right to practice false religions in Maldives,” JamiyyathSalaf said. The organization headed by Abdullah bin Muhammad Ibrahim further called the Peoples’ Majlis to take necessary action against those authorities who fail to punish the heretics as stated in the law. “Protecting and defending Islam together in an unified pulse is important and virtuous than even fulfilling individual basic necessities of life such as eating and drinking,” JamiyyathSalaf said. A new brand for four-star properties is also in the works.Primary countries being targeted for expansion are Zanzibar, Kenya, Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia and Vietnam. The common denominators for these destinations include natural beauty, seclusion, rich cultural and historical heritage, and that they offer "holistic" and "lifestyle" choices, said Heuze. "There is space for a brand that delivers a new offering and level of services in a market which is presently either covered by a large brand or individually owned properties,” he said. “The timing of this expansion is based on the emergence and continued growth of new feeder markets such as China, Brazil, India and Russia, and the anticipated growth of Africa as a leisure and corporate destination.” When queried about what was driving the expansion, Heuzesaid: "Opportunities are ripe for evaluating distress assets, but also (as a result of) the recent trend for developers and owners to consider alternative brands instead of relying on the big brands."

Conrad Maldives hotel offers guests a chance to spot whale sharks
TheConrad Maldives Rangali Island hotel has announced that it is once gain joining forces with the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme. This unique partnership gives visitors to the resort a rare opportunity to view and interact with those amazing aquatic creatures while research is conducted on their behavior, migration patterns, and habitat. The whale shark is the largest fish on the planet, sometimes stretching as much as 40 feet in length and weighing over 20 tons. Despite their great size however, they are known to be docile and gentle creatures who inhabit warm ocean waters like those found in the Maldives. In fact, the island nation happens to be one of the few places on Earth where whale sharks are known to congregate year round. For the 5th year in a row, the MWSRP will be working in conjunction with the Conrad Maldives hotel on their research project, which will continue through February. Until that time, the hotel is offering its guests daily excursions out into the Indian Ocean to view whale sharks in their natural setting. The price of those excursions is $200, which includes transportation aboard a speedboat/luxury cruiser to dive and snorkeling sites that are inhabited by the large fish. For adventurous travelers who love interaction with unique animals, this is an amazing opportunity. Diving in the Maldives provides the chance to not only see the whale shark, but also manta rays, moray eels, grey reef sharks, and sea turtles. Having just returned from a trip to the Virgin Islands, during which snorkeling and diving were frequent activities, I can safely say that I would jump at the chance to do this as well.

Dr. Mausoom said that the earlier regime also failed in developing the islands using this system. The Kelaa MP urged the government to focus on lowering state expenditure, minimising debt, and providing the people with social security and other public welfare services. He said that the councils cannot run efficiently with a small budget. He called for the resignation of all the council members from the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Dr. Mausoom also said that it is important that the government expends majority of the budget on the development of the healthcare and education sector.

Anticipated price changes to essential food products published
The Ministry of Economic Development has prepared an analysis on the anticipated market prices for 29 essential food products for the year 2011, after the reduction of import duty.  The analysis shows that even with the inclusion of 6% GST, and allowing for the same rate of profit as currently applied to the products, the price of these products can reduce between 9% to 13% in the starting year. In addition to this, the analysis is done to show the anticipated reduction in price of the specific items that are currently available in the market. The President ratified the 9th amendment bill to Act number 31/79 (Export Import Act) on the 1st of December 2011. The Act now states that 0% import duty is applied on all construction goods, fertilizers, environment friendly goods and all food products except those that can be produced locally. This reduction is proposed to bring about positive changes to the market prices of essential products.

Maldives' low standing on the corruption index poses a threat to the country- Luthfi
Chair of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Hassan Luthfi has said that the Maldives' low standing on the Transparency International (TI) 2011 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) poses a threat to the country. In an interview to the local TV Channel, VTV, Luthfi said that he is pleased that Maldives improved its ranking in the 2011 Corruption Perception Index compared to the 2010 Index. Luthfi said that if the issue of corruption is not dealt with and addressed properly than it would obstruct the development and progress of the country. He also underscored the importance of passing and enforcement of anticorruption laws. The Chair of ACC assured that the commission would do whatever it can to fight corruption. The index, initiated in 1995, is recognized as the worldwide standard for corruption measurement in the public sector. Transparency International uses opinion surveys and expert assessments to construct the index. Maldives currently ranks 134th out of the 183 countries included in the index.

Price of commodities will fall at the end of February- Nasir
Local business tycoon, Ahmed Nasir (Malla) has said that the fall in the prices of the commodities will be seen at the end of February. In view of the recent amendment to import-export Act which states that zero rate duty applies to all construction goods, environment friendly goods, fertilizers, and machinery run on renewable energy and also removes duty on all food items, except those that can be produced in the Maldives, Nasir said that this would create a spirit of competition among the local businesses and prices would fall as a result of this business competitiveness. He said that the opportunity is open for this. “But I think that the prices would not drop significantly. The reason is that the zero rate duty now would have to be compared to the six percent taken as GST. So the prices of goods that does not require GST would fall. But as for the other products there would not be a significant fall in the prices,” he said. Meanwhile, President Mohamed Nasheed said that the 2012 budget proposed to the parliament by the Minister of Finance and Treasury during the last week, will allow the year 2012 to be a “Duty Free Year”. The President made this remark while highlighting next year’s budget in his radio address delivered this morning. Saying that this budget would bring about many developmental opportunities in the country, the President noted that import duty will be removed from certain goods, which will in turn make their market prices to go down. He also said that GST will be removed as well, from some of the zero-rated goods.

The Maldives Need Action at Durban Conference on Climate Change
As the seventeenth United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, popularly known as COP-17, takes place in Durban, South Africa, November 28–December 9, I think of this man: Dr. Mohammed Waheed Hassan, with whom I had a chance to speak this September in New York. Waheed, as he prefers to be called, is vice president of the Republic of the Maldives, the lowest country on the planet. An archipelago of coral atolls in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives have seen the sea waters around their low-level homeland rise almost eight inches in the last 100 years, and accelerating rates of warming threaten their nation’s existence. “Climate change is making a huge difference for our lives right now,” said Hassan. “About a third of our islands are under severe erosion and many people are losing their homes.” We were both speakers at Moving Planet—an event organized by NYPIRG outside the United Nations General Assembly on a global day of action coordinated by the group 350.org.
