There is no reason for me to be summoned to NSC: Imran


President of the Adhaalath Party, Sheikh Imran Abdullah has said that he believes that there is no good reason for the National Security Committee of the Peoples’ Majlis to summon him.

Speaking at a programme of the local TV Channel, VTV, Sheikh Imran expressed his concern over the government’s scheme to deceive the public regarding the true motive of the protest to be held by Civil Society Coalition and political parties calling on to protect the state religion next Friday.

Sheikh Imran said that the government is violating a constitutional right of every Maldivian by trying to obstruct the December 23 mass protest. He said that this is a characteristic of despotism and dictatorship.

Sheikh Imran said that the government has now gone beyond bounds. He said that the government’s attack against the Shariah rulings is a mockery of Islam. He said that the implementation of Shariah is moderation and that it is not extremism.

Meanwhile, the National Security Committee decided to summon Sheikh Imran and Vice President of the Civil Society Coalition, Abdullah Mohamed.

The committee decided to summon the leading organizers at the meeting of the committee held among its members recently. In the meeting, Galolhu Dhekunu constituence MP, Ahmed Mahloof said that the Friday’s protest will be a peaceful protest. He said that the protest is not organized to shed blood or to cause any violence. He added that the opposition parties and the organizers of the protest does not believe in violence.

Interim Chairperson of the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said that MDP will come out to counter protest. He said that no one can stop them from counter protesting when the MDP has been falsely accused of trying to establish freedom of religion in the Maldives.

The National Security Committee also decided to summon the protest committee of the ruling party. In addition to this, the committee decided to summon Police Commissioner Ahmed Faseeh and Chief of Defense Force Major General Moosa Ali Jaleel.
