Current government a gift given to MDP
by Gasim: Opposition MPs
Opposition members of the Peoples’ Majlis today stated that the current government is a gift presented to the ruling party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) by the leader of the opposition Jumhooree Party (JP), Gasim Ibrahim.
The opposition MPs made this remark at yesterday’s session of the Majlis in response to the criticism of the MPs of the ruling party regarding Gasim’s participation at the “Maldivians, in Defence of Islam” nationwide mass protest.
“Some of the MPs have made very lowly remarks at Maamigili MP Gasim Ibrahim. Despite these false allegations, I say that this nation should be proud of this personality. This freedom that we are so proud of, this green constitution, this would never have happened if Gasim was not there in the special committee of the Majlis. Those MPs who worked sincerely in MDP at that time will acknowledge this fact. I assure you that he strived to make the amendments even though he was under a lot of pressure by the government,” Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed said.
Riyaz Rasheed noted the many philanthropic efforts of Gasim to alleviate the difficulties of the people. He said that the ruling party should thank Gasim for these noble deeds.
“This government is a gift given to MDP by the likes of Gasim Ibrahim and Dr. Hassan Saeed, the leader of the party I am affliated with,” the Vilufushi MP said.
“Where is your sense of shame that you now slander him? Where is your sense of honour? Who brought you to power?,” he queried the MPs of the ruling party.
Eydhafushi MP Ahmed Saleem said that Gasim is the “second Boduthakurufaanu” of Maldives. He said that Gasim is a sincere person who always looks to help the people.
Gemanafushi MP Ilham Ahmed highlighted that it was with the hard work of Gasim that helped to relieve the economic crisis that the country was suffering from.
