There is no excuse to remain ignorant about Islam: Mufti Menk

The visiting scholar, Mufti of Zembabwe, Sheikh Ismail Moosa Menk has said that there is no excuse for anyone to remain ignorant about the religion of Islam.

Lecturing at the hall of Islamic Center, Sheikh Menk said that seeking knowledge is incumbent upon every Muslim. He said that this is the solution to the confusion that is widespread with regards to religious issues.

In view of the misconceptions regarding the Muslim women’s Hijab, Sheikh Menk said that Hijab is a protection and not oppression.

Sheikh Menk said that Islam implies that it is a man's duty to support his wife, and not the reverse, but this, in no way, makes him superior to her. He also said that the the rights and responsibilities of a woman are equal to those of a man although they are not necessarily identical. Since men and women are not created identical, they have different physical and emotional qualities, jobs and privileges, he explained.

Furthermore, repelling the doubts of the disbelievers and hypocrites regarding Islam, the Mufti of Zimbabwe said that the laws of inheritance in Islam are proportional to the duties of spending. Indeed, a man in Islam has the responsibility of supporting his family including the women. He said that a woman, on the other hand, does not bear this responsibility. He added that the woman has the freedom to use the money as she pleases.

Meanwhile, Sheikh Menk is a famour religious scholar, who was born in Harare, Zimbabwe. He was tutored by his father who is also a well known scholar. He completed his memorization of the Quran and recitation courses at an early age and learnt the Arabic and Urdu languages whilst studying Shariah under his father. At the same time he attended St John's College in Harare where he completed his secondary secular education. He then attained a degree in Shariah from the University of Madinah and later specialised at Darul Uloom Kantharia in Gujarat.
