Islamophobes attack Islam out of arrogance- Ali Zahir
Sheikh Ali Zahir has said that haughtiness is the reason for the Islamophobes attacks on Islam. In last night’s ceremony to revive the nights of Ramadan held at Islamic Center, Ali Zahir said that the onslaughts made on Islam are not done out of ignorance. He noted that the uncouth behavior from the enemies of Islam is a result of their injustice, envy and hatred.
Ali Zahir also highlighted that the Jews and Christians knew the truth of the Prophet but denied him because he was not chosen from their nation. Ali Zahir further said that the primary prong of the attack on Islam is with regards to women. He said that it is the onslaught's predominant paradigm. Clearing the misconceptions of the enemies of Islam he said that the status of woman in Islam constitutes no problem. The attitude of the Quran and the early Muslims bear witness to the fact that woman is, at least, as vital to life as man himself, and that she is not inferior to him nor is she one of the lower species. Had it not been for the impact of foreign cultures and alien influences, this question would have never arisen among the Muslims. The status of woman was taken for granted to be equal to that of man. It was a matter of course, a matter of fact, and no one, then, considered it as a problem at all- said Ali Zahir. Ali Zahir also said that women are forbidden from traveling alone to guard her security. Brining a parable he said that Rulers and Merchants never travel alone but always travel with body guards to guard their security. He also said that this can be understood when the matter is studied as a whole with an open mind, rather than being biased and arrogant. The status of woman in Islam is something unique, something novel, something that has no similarity in any other system, said Ali Zahir.

Deadly floods cost Romania over one billion dollars

Deadly floods in Romania this summer have caused damage worth over a billion dollars, its government said on Wednesday, as it planned to seek aid from the European Union. The mudslides were moving at an incredible speed," said Bressac, his eyes red from lack of sleep and a large rucksack flung over his shoulder. On August 5, Bressac, 22, had been leading a group of nine people on a hike from the main Ladakh city of Leh through the surrounding Markah Valley, one of the region's most popular high-altitude treks for foreign adventure tourists. Judges take oath of office despite the absence of the law
Fifty-nine judges serving at Male courts, has taken the oath of office last night. Of all the judges serving in Male’ Courts, only two did not take the oath, Miadhu Daily understands. During the ceremony, Aishath Velzini, President’s Member to the Judicial Service Commission, said that just minutes before the ceremony President Nasheed has called Mujuthaz Fahumy, President of the JSC, and urged to delay the ceremony until necessary Act is adopted in the Parliament. Oath of office was conducted by Supreme Court judge Abdulla Areef. Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed said that in the challenging days, JSC President Mujuthaz Fahumy has played a crucial role in the process to make judges permanent and thanked and welcomed the JSC President. Chief Justice also had the audacity to say that “Judges are being treated lowly these days. This is a challenging period for the judiciary certainly”. However, some noted that some decisions by Judiciary, latest being making itself permanent without necessary law, has undermined respect for the judiciary in the Maldives. Aishath Velzini also attempted to disrupt the ceremony, and urged the judges not take the oath of office. Velzini also urged judges to walk out of the ceremony if any supports her position, however, none joined her. The ceremony also began when Velzini was expressing her concern on the whole fiasco. Speaking to Maidhu Daily, Mujuthaz Fahumy said “it was the decision of the JSC to continue with the ceremony and I cannot prevent it once JSC decided. I cannot prevent from implementing the decisions of the JSC either”. “We did it because President Nasheed gave green light. And after okaying, even if he appeal to stop it, we cannot simply cancel the ceremony” he added. A group of protesters has also gathered near JSC and demonstrated against the ceremony.

Delivering justice now comes to an end, claims public member to JSC
With the process to make the 59 judges permanent, delivering justice comes to an end, claims Sheikh Shuaib Abdul Rahman, people’s representative to Judicial Service Commission. Speaking to Television Maldives, Shuaib Abdul Rahman also stated that last night’s events show the state of Maldives judiciary. Sheikh Shuhaib also noted that he has supported the guidelines to make judges permanent, but the support is in no way an endorsement to make the judges who do not meet the requirements permanent. He also stated that he had supported guidelines despite being short of expectation, as it would be difficult to fire too many judges, and he was of the view that those judges can be trained to improve their standards. Shuaib also said he wanted to participate in press conferences organized by the JSC but did not get the opportunity. Shuaib also said that he has served as a judge. He also noted that the same challenges present back then are still present. He also noted that over the years those challenges have not been addressed and that he does not wish to solely blame the judges on the situation of judiciary.

Multi-party democracy in Maldives is facing a major crisis after less than two years of its establishment. A bitter political struggle has emerged between the president and opposition-led national parliament since June. This has resulted in several street demonstrations in Male, in which scores of policemen and civilians have been injured. A situation of political deadlock exists, which may not be good for the nascent democracy in Maldives. The seeds of the present impasse go back to the 2009 parliamentary election when the Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) led by Maumoon Abdul Gayoom managed to get a simple majority in parliament with the help of the People’s Alliance (PA) and some independents. President Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has 28 MPs and the support of four independent MPs in the 77-member Parliam

In his weekly radio address, President Mohamed Nasheed has said government is trying to speed up development projects in the islands. “Ever since we came to office, we have been trying to find ways to speed up infrastructure projects immediately required,” said the President. The President added that “groundwork for several such projects has now been done, and they are ready to start in the coming days.” The projects include provision of utilities services like water and electricity, establishing sewerage systems, and roads construction projects. The President noted the agreement between Southern Utilities Limited and the Biwater Group to provide utilities in South Province, and the agreement between Upper South Utilities Limited and the UEM Group of United States to provide water and sewerage systems in the Upper South Province. The government, he said, was implementing those projects through Public-Private Partnerships, as it would take several years if the government alone tried to invest in those projects. Also, on Thursday, the President launched three major development projects in Kulhudhuffushi including roads, housing and water supply projects. In his radio address, the President discussed the talks between political parties to find ways to solve the political impasse in the country. He said he could see a “bright view” since the talks began. “I hope that the talks between MDP and DRP will see a productive outcome,” he said. The President reiterated his readiness to face all elections that will ensue following constitutional amendments to find a long term solution to political deadlock in the country.

Huge satellite to become 'space junk'
The European Space Agency is set to become the owner of what could become the most dangerous piece of space debris orbiting the Earth, officials say. The agency will take control of the Envisat satellite, at more than 17,000 pounds the biggest non-military Earth observation satellite ever built, SPACE.com reported Tuesday. When the Envisat mission ends in 2013, the retired satellite will become a huge "space junk" problem that will not go away for 150 years, experts say. That is how long it will take for Envisat to be gradually pulled into the Earth's atmosphere, they predict. In January, the upper stage of a Chinese rocket almost collided with Envisat, and ground controllers had to use the satellite's thrusters to move it out of the way. Once Envisat is retired in three years, such maneuvers will no longer be possible, scientists say. Had the collision happened, it would have polluted a highly populated portion of low-Earth orbit with large amounts of space debris, Heiner Klinkrad of ESA's space debris office said.

Has Peace Brought Happiness To Sri Lanka?
Since the bloody 30 year war ended in a shoot-out in a remote mangrove in the North, in Colombo we have all been enjoying a semblance of peace. Of course there are yet no strong institutions which would boost Sri Lanka’s democracy. Good discipline is sadly lacking at all levels for peace to grow. The bottom line is this. Discipline should be part and parcel set down in the laws of the country. Unfortunately, we have a situation where laws in this country are still arbitrarily invoked and applied by individuals or authorities

Great chance for Lanka to become No 1: Sanga
That Sri Lanka are sitting on the cusp and are one win away from becoming the number one Test team is the world is no longer a secret. Should Kumar Sangakkara’s men win the ongoing series against India by a margin of 2-0 or better, they will dislodge India from the summit and occupy top-dog status. In the event of that transpiring, it will inevitably trigger further discussions about the rankings system that allows a team to reach the number one status without ever winning a Test series in the three countries ranked immediately below it. Only on Thursday, the Sri Lankan skipper had casually queried India’s position at the helm. Faced with the prospect of his own team ascending the throne despite not winning Test series in India, Australia and South Africa, Sangakkara had this to say, “It’s great opportunity for us. It’ll be good if we can covert it. Hopefully, it’ll be an added motivation for us.”

Parties must choose which system of government they want - Zuhair
Press Secretary Zuhair has said that political parties must choose which system of government they want: either a presidential or a parliamentary system. “Regardless of the system of government chosen, one thing remains clear: the chosen system must be allowed to function effectively,” said Press Secretary Zuhair. Zuhair said that “technical issues” in the current constitution allowed a simple majority in parliament to effectively hold the executive to ransom. “The Majlis is designed to be a check and balance on the power of the executive and it should hold the executive to account. But the constitution currently allows a simple majority in parliament to obstruct the core functions of the executive, such as raising taxes and providing subsidies," said the Press Secretary. “This constitutional muddle is making it difficult to run the country,” added Zuhair. "If political parties want a Presidential system of government, they must allow that system to operate effectively,” he noted. "If the parties want a parliamentary system, then they must ask the people in a referendum, amend the constitution accordingly and hold fresh parliamentary elections,” said Zuhair. “The President has said if political parties opt for a parliamentary system, he is also prepared to stand in the parliamentary elections that would ensue,” added Zuhair. “MPs must not, however, try and create a parliamentary system by stealth through passing laws that grant them ever more power,” the Press Secretary said. "What is of paramount importance is that we consolidate democracy in the Maldives. That is something the government is determined to see through," he stated.
