Minister of Islamic Affairs Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has said that if justice is not served equally then there is no need to hold an election in Maldives.
Speaking to the media at the Adhaalath Office, Sheikh Shaheem said, "The Prosecutor General's office cannot say that they have no objection to postpone a case of certain individuals because of their status. Judges should not be intimidated to postpone cases just like that."
"There should not be any deals made to influence and interfere in the judiciary," he said.
Sheikh Shaheem said that the Adhaalath Party is very concerned over this issue. He said that the Adhaalat Party wants equity and fairness in everything and there should not be any injustice and inequality when serving justice.
"Even if a person who is considered to be noble and from the elites is charged with a crime he should be trialed in court," he said.
Sheikh Shaheem said that if the judges consider that justice should be served equally only when the people come out to the streets then the people from Thuraakunu to Addu City Hithadhoo will come out to the streets to protest against injustice. He said that Adhaalath Party has the capability to do that.
In addition to this Sheikh Shaheem noted that a person cannot be labeled a criminal only after being convicted in a court of law. And if one is charged with a crime then he should be prosecuted accordingly or else there will be chaos in the country.
