Canadian Foreign Minister is trying to hold up his fallen friend- PPM

The Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has stated that the Canadian Foreign Minister is trying to hold up his fallen friend former President Mohamed Nasheed by his statement regarding the decision of Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG).

PPM Council member Ali Arif said that the Canadian Foreign Minister’s statements are in contradiction to the statements issued by the CMAG and the other 7 members of the group. He said that this matter will be raised to the Canadian government.

“The general votes taken after the resignation of Nasheed show that MDP has lost their popularity. MDP is losing almost every election. Therefore, it is very clear that the Canadian foreign minister’s statements are not in conformity to the views of the majority of the people of Maldives,” he said.

Ali Arif said that if the Canadian government or even the Commonwealth fails to respect the view of the Maldivian majority and the constitution of Maldives then Maldives is not in need of anything to do with Canada or Commonwealth.

“We want out nation. We want out religion, that is Islam. We want our constitution,” he said.

Galolhu Dhekunu MP Ahmed Mahloof said that the Canadian Foreign Minister is unjust and his statements are biased.

“Canadian foreign minister is worried because Nasheed is facing prosecution. It is common sense that criminals will face prosecution. There is no discrimination of the weak from the strong in facing prosecution if you are a criminal,” he said.

Mahloof said that Canada has shown no concern when former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom was summoned to the Police Headquarters during Nasheed’s regime. He said that he is facing charges during Nasheed’s government and still it is in the court process Canada has shown no concern but now when MDP’s Parliamentary members are being summoned to court Canada is making it an issue.

Mahloof accused the foreign Minister of Canada of trying to achieve some hidden agenda by his statements when no other country has stated anything of that regard.
