Nasheed’s Final Destination Alarmed: summoned for court
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has been summoned by the Civil Court for defaming Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim calling him a “rebel”.
Civil Court official revealed that Nasheed was given the summon notice and he should appear at Court on October 2 over the defamation charged filed by Minister Nazim.
Defence Minister Nazim and Commissioner of Police Riyaz filed a case at Civil Court against former President Nasheed for defaming them by calling them “rebels” in his speech following the release of the final report of the Commission of National Inquiry (CoNI).
In view of this case, Nasheed said in a media release that he only became aware of the defamation case yesterday through media reports on it.
Nasheed assured that he will prove to court that Nazim and Riyaz are rebels. He said that this trial is a golden opportunity to prove that he was toppled from power through a coup. He said that the CoNI’s investigation was carried out as a criminal case so he is sure that he can prove his case in the civil court.
Nasheed said that there are many officers from Maldives Police Service and Maldives National Defence Force who are ready to testify against Nazim and Riyaz.
According to the legal team of Minister Nazim and Commissioner Riyaz both the cases are submitted as two separate cases and Nasheed is being charged under Article 33 of the constitution and the regulation on compensation for defamation
