Government cannot tell not to prosecute Nasheed – Dr. Jameel


 Home Minister Dr. Mohamed Jameel has said that the government cannot inform on any grounds  on not prosecuting former President Mohamed Nasheed . He said in a response to the former Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed’s comment on the former President. Dr. Shaheed said that Maldives cannot be removed from CMAG agenda unless all the cases against Nasheed is removed.

 Speaking to V News Dr. Jameel said democracy doesn’t provide immunity to a specific individual. And punishment to that individual  should be given if that individual goes against democracy. 

Dr. Jameel said case against Nasheed will not be held if he stayed at  his home decently.  But he took many people in to the streets and brought  terrorism and  chaos to the country. So, he said Nasheed will be punished.

Jameel said  the democracy system in Maldives separates the 3 powers and the court will punish the the deserved one if  the person commits the criminal charges.

He said nobody can lay conditions on  government’s work on removing of Maldives from CMAG and it cannot be accepted. He also said some have forgotten the system in Maldives and is trying to make supporters of Nasheed  happy. And he said  no productive outcome will get because of this.
