Govt will not make any deals with Nasheed- Abbas

Press Secretary Abbas Adil Riza has said that the government will not make any deals with the former President Mohamed Nasheed to remove Maldives from the agenda of Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) or any other matter.

In view of former Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed Shaheed’s claim that Maldives can only be removed from the agenda of CMAG only after fulfilling certain conditions, Abbas said that he is not aware of any such conditions. He said that regardless of any such conditions he said that the government will not make any discussions on refraining from prosecuting any criminal charges against the former President Mohamed Nasheed or a member of the Peoples’ Majlis.

Abbas said that politicians should work within the confines of politics when seeking authority or power. He said that the present government will not regard acts of terror and harassment as political activities that can be excused.

Abbas said that if the CMAG makes this an excuse to keep the Maldives in their agenda then they can do so but the government will not make any compromises in this. He said that the government will not change its policies regardless of how long the CMAG keeps Maldives in their agenda.

Replying to a question raised by Miadhu Daily in view of the claims of Nasheed that among the reasons why CMAG will not remove Maldives from their agenda is the criminal charge made against him, Abbas said that the government will not give any foreign organisation or party to interfere in the internal affairs of Maldives.
