President underscores importance of Women in maintaining the natural beauty of Maldives 


President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has said Maldivian women have played a very significant role in maintaining the natural beauty of the Maldives.

The President made these remarks while speaking  after laying the foundation of the waste management centre in Maamendhoo of Gaafu Alifu Atoll established by Mohamed Ali Janaah.

President Dr. Waheed said that the women exert a lot of effort to keep the islands clean. He said that it is from the tradition of the Maldivian women to gather themselves and clean the island. He said that it is because of this the islands of Maldives remain beautiful and clean.

Addressing the people of Maamendhoo following the foundation laying ceremonies, the President highlighted the need to adapt to a new system of waste management and recycle waste products as much as possible.

Speaking in this regard, the President said that it was important to treat and manage non-biodegradables properly, and said that it could also be used for power generation.

In his speech, President Waheed underlined the increasing rate of the population, noting that it in turn increases the amount of waste thrown away.

The President said that as our beaches were directly linked to our main source of income – tourism; we must be responsible in disposing waste products and not throw them on our beaches or the seaside.

Furthermore, the President expressed his gratitude to Mohamed Ali Janaah for aiding the people with a waste management centre.
