Govt calls on CMAG to remove Maldives from its agenda
Following the publication of the final report by the Commission of National
Inquiry (CNI) which was set up to investigate the alleged coup on February 7
against former President Mohamed Nasheed, stating that it had indeed not been a
coup speaking at a press conference held at the Foreign Ministry, State Foreign
Minister Dhunya Maumoon had said that “the Maldivian government is calling for
the immediate removal of the country’s name from the CMAG’s agenda.”
“We believe that it was set on the agenda in an inappropriate manner. Several
accusations and lies were directed towards the Maldives. The Maldives was
included in the CMAG’s agenda through the influence of personal connections of
certain individuals,” Dhunya said.
The State Minister said that the final verdict of the CNI is evident to everyone and that it proves the change of government had been brought well within the contours of the constitution.
“So now we know that this is a constitutional government. We don’t have to face anymore accusations. It has all been cleared,” she said.
“We want to call on the CMAG countries to remove us from the CMAG agenda
immediately. The Maldives is a member of CMAG. So we see it as important for us
to reassume that role,” she stressed.
Dhunya noted that even the Commonwealth had welcomed the final report by the CNI
and the Indian government has also called on the country to respect its
findings.
She revealed that a CMAG meeting is to be held on September 28 and that though
she has received news of a teleconference to be held soon it has not been
confirmed yet.
