Heavy rain causes nationwide devastation
Strong winds with heavy rainfall and rough seas are being experienced in all parts of the country causing severe damage to property.
Dhanbindhoo council’s President AbdulHaseeb informed Miadhu Daily that the island was struck with a tornado at about 9:15 in the morning causing considerable damages. He said that a roof of a house was blown away and now the youth have repaired the roof.
Haseeb said that the roof of a storage house was also blown during the tornado attack. He said that precautionary measures have been taken in case the island is flooded due to the heavy rain.
Laamu Atoll Council informed that many islands have been devastated by the heavy rain and farms have been flooded in many islands.
During the heavy pour Ihavandhoo, Dhiddhoo, Kela and Baarah experienced many material damages. Ihavandhoo council Vice President Mohamed Rasheed informed Miadhu Daily that the island experienced non stop heavy rain from 5:00 in the afternoon till 1:00 in the night. He said that the whole island has been flooded. He said that this has caused lot of difficulties.
Many Atolls are facing bad weather with heavy rain and strong wind these days with heavy flooding and material damage in many Atolls. The Met Office has informed that the next 24 hours will see heavy showers in some Atolls with rough seas.
The Met Office has advised travellers to take caution while travelling.
According to the Met Office, torrential rain will be experienced from 30/2215 - 31/0015 over HD. Hanimaadhoo and adjoining areas.
Since Maldives is currently facing severe weather with heavy rain, thunder and rough sea conditions, MNDF Coast Guard requested all travellers to take necessary precautionary measures and depend on the latest meteorological data before setting out for their journey.
Most importantly, Coast Guard requested travellers to be very careful about weather while travelling at night and also suggests cargo suppliers not to overload their vessels. Coast Guard requested all vessels to keep life jackets available for all passengers on-board.
Moreover, Coast Guard requested all sea transport vessels, including those which are anchored or undertaking journey, to be aware about the weather and to keep available a water pump, check communication radio sets and to adhere with all the maritime safety regulations.
