Dr. Shakeela calls for financial support for conservation of bio diversity

 


Minister of Environment and Energy Dr. Mariyam Shakeela has calld for financial support for the conservation of biological diversity.

Speaking at the Ministerial High Level Segment of the Eleventh Meeting of Conference ofParties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP11) held in Hyderabad, India, Minister of Environment and Energy high-lighted the importance of global commitment,especially from countries who are in a better financial position to help raise funds and technicalsupport for the implementation and realization of conservation policies and programme toconserve biological diversity.
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is a convention adopted in 1992, after the EarthSummit with three main objectives of conservation of biological diversity, sustainable use ofbiological resources and equitable sharing of benefits of genetic resources. Maldives became aparty to CBD on 09 September 1992.

“Due to the recent global financial recessions; it is understandable that finance may be hard tocome by. But let us not forget it is also these difficult times that assistance is most needed andgenerosity is most expected, “stated Dr. Mariyam Shakeela, during her speech at the High LevelSegment of COP 11.

Minister also met with met Executive Secretary of CBD Mr. Braulio Ferreira De Souza Diasand CEO of Global Environment Facility, Naoko Ishii at the sideline of this meeting. Theyappreciated the commitment made by Maldives in conserving biodiversity and assured theirsupport to implement the policies of Maldives to conserve biodiversity.
