No one in this country will oppose immediate passing of Evidence Bill- Mahloof

Galolhu Dhekunu constituency MP Ahmed Mahloof has said that that he does not believe that no one will oppose the immediate passing of Evidence Bill submitted to the Peoples’ Majlis now.

Mahloof said that the people hesitate to give testimony to witnessing crime because of many reasons. He said that these reasons include that witnesses get death threats by criminals.

“The criminals involved in gang violence and murder cases they threaten the witnesses. People from their side threaten the witnesses. The lawyers appointed by them also help them in this so how can the witnesses give testimony when their life is in danger,” he said.

Mahloof said that considering these issues people might give testimony against the murders in cases which involve the murder of their own relatives without hesitation but in general cases the witnesses hesitate to give testimony.

Mahloof said that it will be unjust for the members of the Peoples’ Majlis to go for annual leave without passing the Evidence Bill and others bills related to this. He submitted a resolution against going for leave without passing these bills.

The Evidence Bill sets out rules and procedures to be followed by judges relating to evidence submitted in court proceedings.  The Bill also addresses difficulties that judges currently face due to lack an Evidence Act.
