Nasheed’s passport withheld

Judicial Administration has revealed that the passport of the former President Mohamed Nasheed has been withheld following the travel ban on him in relation to the  over allegations of abuse of power during his tenure.

Media official of the Judicial Administration, Latheefa Gasim told Miadhu Daily that passports are not withheld in every court case but in cases where it is necessary.

Latheefa Gasim said that Nasheed’s passport was withheld in relation to the case against him over the charges of the illegal arrest and detention of Criminal Court Chief Judge Abdullah Mohamed.

She said that the passport can still be granted back in case of necessity. She added that Nasheed’s passport was withheld on the same day the Police was ordered by the court to arrest him to produce him in the court hearing of the case.

Department of Immigration and Emigration also confirmed that Nasheed’s passport was withheld. Nasheed defied the travel ban and failed to appear on the first two hearings of the case but later was arrested by the Police and brought to Male’ to attend the hearing. He was released subsequently after the hearing. The next hearing is scheduled for November 4.
