Minister Dr. Shakeela calls countries to consider cutting down on emission as a moral obligation towards our planet
During the inaugural session of the two day international seminar on energy access, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh; Minister Dr. Mariyam Shakeela calls countries to consider cutting down on emission as a moral obligation towards our planet and our future generations. She said many poor nations are victimized by brutal climate change effects while some nations are selectively blind to their actions and its consequences.
Minister questioned those countries who claim sustainability as a luxury they cannot afford, to consider why they cannot act morally and do the right thing when geographically and socially challenged countries like Maldives can afford to take sustainable measures to mitigate climate change. She emphasized the importance of energy access by saying that the goals stated in Rio+20 outcomes document and the MDG’s cannot be achieved without universal access to sustainable energy.
Minister highlighted the Maldivian government’s 5 year investment plan and its role to harness renewable energy and its consequent benefits. Minister congratulated the effort of Indian Government for its effort in promoting renewable energy throughout the country, region and beyond.
The purpose of the international seminar on energy access is to promote development of renewable energy by removing barriers impeding Renewable Energy use and its deployment in large scale for attaining sustainable energy for all.
This two-day high profile International Seminar had participants from more than 40 countries and other international organizations.
During the seminar Minister Dr. Shakeela also had bilateral meetings with ministers from number of countries including Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius, and discussed collaboration and assistance on energy sector development.
