Maldives Police Service has stated that the Police had to break the door the door of a room of former Housing Minister Mohamed Aslam’s residence where former President Mohamed Nasheed was staying, during the operation conducted to arrest him under an arrest warrant issued by Hulhumale’ Court, because Aslam refused to open it despite Nasheed’s request to open it.

In a press conference held yesterday the Police showed a video footage of the operation to the media. Nasheed is heard saying, “I am ready to open the door but I am not able to open it.” The Police stated that they requested Aslam to open it when it was confirmed that Nasheed was in the room.

However, the Police said that Asalm refused to cooperate with the Police even when the Police repeatedly requested him to open it. The Police said that they doubted the intention of Aslam when he tried to walk away in another direction after claiming that he wants to discuss some matters with Nasheed.

“Wasting time will lead to troubles in these situations, Therefore the Police acted procedures approved under the set regulations of internationally accepted law enforcement bodies throughout the world. They broke the door open,” the Police said.

“We did not see Aslam’s father despite the claims. We only saw Madaveli constituency MP Nazim and he was fully clothed,” the Police stated. The Police also revealed that they will be paying for the doors as recompense for breaking them.
