President holds discussion with relevant authorities regarding implementing death penalty
-Law on death penalty to be sent to Majlis within three weeks


 President Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik has held discussions with top officials of the relevant authorities regarding the implementation of death penalty in the Maldives.

Vice President Mohamed Waheedeen, Chief Justice Ahmed Faiz Hussain, Prosecutor General Ahmed Muizz, Human Rights Commission President Mariyam Azra Ahmed, Minister of Defence and National Security Colonel (retired) Mohamed Nazim, Minister of Home Affairs Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed, Attorney General Azima Shukoor, Minister of Gender Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed and Minister of Islamic Affairs Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed participated in the meeting held at the President’s Office.

President Dr. Mohamed Waheed held the meeting underscoring the importance of discussing the matter with relevant authorities given the death penalty is issued in the courts against murderers and is included in the Islamic Sharia and Maldivian law.

The President decided to conclude all legal works of the process and send the draft to the Peoples’ Majlis within three weeks.

Miadhu Daily was informed that all participants of the meeting agreed that the death penalty can be implemented under a law specifically for the penalty.
