Nasheed has been arrested and is on way to Male’


Police has arrested former President Mohamed Nasheed for an order from Hulhumale’ Magistrate Court to produce him in Court for the unlawful arrest of Chief Judge of the Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed to be held tomorrow at 4 PM.

Nasheed was arrested from  Faresmathoda while he was at former housing Minister Mohamed Aslam’s house. 50 police were involved in arresting him and police has left faresmathoda with Nasheed to bring him to Male’. Some media, supporting Nasheed said, he was to meet the Canadian Ambassador today but has not given any details of where and when is the meeting is scheduled to be held..

Members from the parliament Imthiyaz Fahmee, Ilyas Labeeb, who were with Nasheed in Faresmathoda  are coming to Male with Nasheed.

 

The court order which was issued yesterday ordered the police to produce the former President Nasheed in court tomorrow on 9th October, 2012, at 1600 hours and the order included the authority to arrest Nasheed during the process.

 

The court trial have been obstructed twice by Nasheed’s non-appearance in court to face the charges. His lawyers have also refused attend the court. The case is brought against him by the country’s independent Prosecutor General after an investigation by the independent Human Rights Commission which found Nasheed to be directly responsible for the arrest.

 

Government Spokesman Mr. Abbas Adil Riza has confirmed to raajjenews.com that, Former President Mr. Nasheed is under police vustody due to the court order and he will be fully released after tomorrows hearing at the Justice building.

Hulhumale’ Magistrate Court has ordered yesterday the arrest of former President Mohamed Nasheed to produce him in Court for the unlawful arrest of Chief Judge of the Criminal Court Abdullah Mohamed.

Maldives Police Service informed the media that they are now in the process of implementing the court order.

The case is brought against him by the country's independent Prosecutor General after an investigation by the independent Human Rights Commission which found Nasheed to be directly responsible for the arrest.

 Immediately after he resigned Nasheed announced that he was ready to face any charges and that he had requested the courts to speed up the matter. However, when he received court summons for the start of the trial, Nasheed declared that the trial was politically motivated and his part, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) passed a declaration that the courts were defunct and that no member of the party would follow any court orders. Nasheed then left the capital on a campaign trip despite him being banned from leaving the capital. He accompanied by MDP MPs even though the Peoples’ Majlis was in session.

If Nasheed is found guilty of the charges he will face a jail sentence or banishment for three years or a MVR 3,000 fine, a sentence that would bar him from contesting future elections.

 

Former Law and reform Minister , South Kulhudhufushi constituency member of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has said that charges against former President Mohamed Nasheed are not politically based charges. Writing details about charges against Nasheed since 2000, on his own blog MP Nasheed said, the fourth charge against Nasheed is very different from the previous charges. He said the fourth charge against Nasheed is charged due to the acts he had done during his tenure as President. MP  Nasheed said the charge is over the arrest and detention of Chief Criminal Judge Abdullah Mohamed.
